Tried to do this with let them activate for $299 and it doesn't work. I'm not familiar with this option but I assume it means I need to also upgrade my plan to get the extra $100 off (not happening). Despite that, I will probably still go this route as the $40 I'll get for a trade in is probably about the most I'll be able to muster at this point (S9+).

If you have an account, you should add a new line (and then cancel that afterwards). See the thread mentioned in the original post.
