Try "trail run project" app instead. You can download maps for free. I've just started using it, but seems to have similar functionality.

Downloadable maps isn't the biggest draw for me for AllTrails. The large user base with accurate and recent reviews of trails including conditions is as or if not more important to me.

anyone know how long this is valid for? not going to use it next till September so would rather hold off to buy a year's worth as late as I can

I use Google map. Use the different legend. You can also cache your google map.

And "hiking project". Same developer, same basic idea, but geared at hiking.

Also, fwiw, I'm in Canada now, and alltrails is $17.99CAD with the coupon. Or about 27% cheaper.

Got this last year at the same exact time so it's expiring today. Perfect.

Also please curb the conversation about Gaia and other free map apps. They certainly have their place and nice custom mapping features but they lack a lot as well. AllTrails is perfect for discoverability and easy to use. $18 for the year is worth the price of admission and motivation to get out and hike. I go solo backpacking once every one or two months now and I wouldn't have started if I didn't have AllTrails as a hiking companion.

After email, Alltrails is the app I use the most. Currently on a cross country trip using it every day. Great to find new trails, where to park, difficulty, fees (TX and a few other states charge entrance fees), plus info on shade, mosquitoes, bears, safety, etc.
