I really wish Amazon would go back to letting us buy GC with amazon credit.

For the first time, BestBuy lets you buy gift cards using rewards points.
Up until now, rewards could only be used for purchases at BestBuy.
The BestBuy credit card has quarterly rewards categories, such as 5% off utility bills.
So now I can convert my rewards points into Amazon gift cards.
Note the very first comment from BLUEKIWI: BestBuy gift cards have the best rewards to cash ratio.

You should have bought that Samsung ring size whatever pack with it. I did just that, $10 BB gc for $4.65 that won't expire.

Wait, wait, so effectively Best Buy is letting you double your rewards points redemption value if you use it to buy a BB gift card instead of issuing rewards certificates? Seems like a no-brainer especially since gift cards do not expire but rewards certificates do …

Keep in mind you can also purchase something (pre-order works best) with your reward certificate and then cancel it and the certificate will be returned as points (can also do in-store pickup and cancel or not pick it up). This may only work now if you are a Best Buy Credit Card holder from point banking turned on.

I was excited until I saw the terrible exchange rates. No thanks

For a free credit card, the BB card is decent. I've been getting 5% back at BB, 5% back in a different category each quarter- I've been choosing "wholesale clubs" (includes Walmart and Target for some reason), 3% back on gas, 2% back on groceries, and no foreign transaction fees. They also have been giving me increased "spend outside BB" promos like spend $3,500 and get an extra $75. I plan my big purchases (like vacations) around those spending deals.

No. The redemption cost for a Best Buy gift card is equal to that of a reward certificate. 250 points = $5 certificate or gift card. It costs twice as much for non-Best Buy gift cards. The 3rd party cards are not the baseline value to consider.

And while reward certificates expire and gift cards don't, which to get depends on what you're wanting to use them on. There is a limit to the number of gift cards you can use on one transaction, and this new site only lets you get a $25 gift card at most. If you redeem for a certificate you can get up to $100 on one certificate.

This is a good point and the source of my error. $100 spend is 2.5 rewards points which is a $5 rewards certificate.

Very confusing. Thank you for clarification.

So what this means is actually redeeming this points for gift cards (other than Best Buy gift cards) is a bad deal.

Here, rewards certs are more valuable than gift cards because they act as a discount on the price, so you don't pay sales tax on the amount paid for it with rewards certs

No kidding, interesting. I'll have to see how it works for me next time I redeem one. Do you know if it varies by state?
