The model is pretty old and weak (450 in torque) compared to other of 2100 in torque for an impact driver. Also 0.6 lbs heavier than the newest model. And wider than newst model. 99% brand tool deal at homedepot is get rid of outdated hard to sell product by combining it with a battery.

I almost never touch my Fuel impact driver after buying this. I can use this anywhere anytime without having to go get a muffler.

Oil impulse drivers have lower torque, but they sustain torque longer, a review on ToolGuyd shows that the impact driver can only deliver the torque in quick short bursts. If you only do small to medium sized screws, the difference is negligible because the Surge has more than enough torque. The impact will probably be half a second to a second faster when you drive huge lag bolts.

Price for the battery alone is a good deal. Not sure what kind of power you're needing, but I've used this drill to build/repair semi trucks for years and even with this being the "older version" I doubt you will find a more dependable drill. They fit great in the hand, i weigh 170lbs and lift it over my shoulder repeatedly with no issues/effort. The weight primarily comes from the battery and they do sell a smaller battery. I use this thing 8+ hours a day and have for years, I own 1 and it's all I use, this thing should have all the power you could want/expect from an electric impact.

Still patiently awaiting a 2nd gen M12 version, myself - maybe next year...

It's not always about which tool puts out the most power. You're missing the point of these if that's all you're thinking about. As others have said, they're much less noisy. They also offer a much finer degree of control. There's still a a place for these in many tool collections despite being a bit 'outdated'.
