You can if you bring up the tool only and then select the free battery, it's $169 though, but you can return the tool and the battery is $81.92.

Very little experience with the surge but feedback I'm hearing isn't great. Everyone I know says it just lacks the torque. Fyi

I just got the M12 version for general use. The use case is mostly for lighter work since the reduced noise is really nice (I wear ear pro when using standard impacts usually). I wouldn't try using this for driving huge structural screws or anything, but that's also not what it's really meant for.

Depends what you use it for. I find it more than adequate driving 10 x 3-1/2 GRK R4's for framing, as well as 5/16" RSS structural screws into pressure-treated. If you were driving lags all day everyday you might want something more powerful, but I find the Surge perfect in terms of noise and capability.

Never understood why people feel the need to comment about things they don't understand. You even said so yourself. If you actually used the tool, you'd know the limitations and what makes it so great. People who complain about the surge are judging it outside its intended use.

It has a point, but the poster or the people the poster is listening to don't have a very complex understanding of the niche these tools fit.
There's been more than one occasion where brief interaction with someone left me with the impression that they weren't that bright or capable as far as whatever we're discussing or working on, but fast forward a few years later and another interaction suggests they're quite competent in their field. We're all somewhere along the learning curve.

Can anyone explain what niche the hydraulic impacts fill?

Same. Just got my M12 version a month ago and love it. Light, quiet, and feels solid. I haven't driven anything bigger than a 3" deck screw yet, but had zero problems with that. As long as folks aren't expecting to break away rusted 1/2" bolts, it's a great little tool, IMO.

Reduced violence of impact action (i.e. more finesse), and reduced noise.

Noise reduction could be helpful at night, or in an enclosed area which concentrates sound (e.g., underneath a cabinet).
