I'll take the HCX and Optimizer processing over DV.
Not all content has DV, even then depending on the transfers, the Optimizer does so well the difference isn't that big.
You can look at Samsung Oled display threads to see how people don't miss DV.
If you play BR/DVD disc, the 420s processing would be a better choice with that.

If you're on a budget the 420 is definitely the better choice.
Performance wise the only difference is DV and the 820 is has a more solid feel if that matters.
The Optimizer does such a good job with HDR content, unless the DV transfer is much better(which isn't often) the difference is often marginal in my experience.
When the 420 gets to 199 or lower that's pretty hard to beat for the performance you get imo.
The issue with the Sonys is the possible known disc issues/glitches(I had on both).
People have mentioned in the past setting changes that helped.
Keep in mind Sony requires you to manually change DV on/off accordingly.
420 was easily better with all 3 disc formats.
Not surprising, you're comparing a dedicated device to one that just offers it as a secondary option.
Is the difference big enough to have a separate device for disc, not at all.
If you play or interested in games a console is the overall better choice imo.
Streaming 4k is pretty irrelevant since it's pretty inferior to disc quality especially on the audio side.

Not to mention many people don't play games, why would pay a higher price for something primarily designed for games to play movies.
Best Buy currently has an open box excellent for $154.

This can also be a sign of owning a bootleg, as they are prone to this kind of error.
All of this is to say it is probably not the player. Some can read defective discs, but in most cases, it's just the disc.
