If you create a guest membership and try to buy this, they will charge you a $20 guest surcharge instead of the usual 10% surcharge, becuase it is a "special purchase." After that and the $8 shipping costs, its about same price as several other drives out there...

I probably buy 50 - 100 5TB portable hard drives per year.
This is the best deal I've seen in a while.
It used to be common (a few years ago) to find them at this price on sale, but not in the last year or 2.

Even at $100, it's the best deal around these days usually, so at $90, it's even better.

Regarding shucking: No WD portable drive sold in the last 12 years that I've seen, (and I've seen thousands) has been shuckable to become a SATA drive, and this of course is no different.

Regarding SMR: all WD portables that I've seen since about 2018 or so are SMR. This one is definitely SMR.

Wow price has gone up tremendously. Bought this for $56 a couple years ago. I know it's not the same being it's Element and it's black. But $90 just wow.

That is correct. I bought 2 in the last year for 99 and thought that was a good price. 89 is great.

FYI,
Slightly slower transfer speeds as these spin at 4800rpm and not 5400rpm like other 2.5" form factor drives. Also, the head movements are quite audible.

Is this drive good for time machine backup or any other recommendation? I was thinking of getting an external drive, which doesn't need to be portable for the use case.

1. SMR
2. This version has micro-USB 3 connector - worst USB connector ever.

I'm pretty sure the $56 ones on ebay you show were recertified drives, and that was the cheapest I'd ever seen them (in bulk). I bought a lot of those, but they weren't new.
I think the lowest I'd seen them new was $70.

ugh. can somebody give me their perspective on why people still buy hard drives in this day and age? i recognize the cost per gigabyte is undoubtedly better than an SSD, but i have yet to find a hard drive that was fast enough for my uses. every time ive bought one, ive wished i had just saved for an SSD. is this just me being impatient, or are hard drives too slow to bother with?
SSD drives need to be plugged in occasionally, 2-5 years, or it may get discharged and lose data. Magnetic hard drive doesn't have that issue. I plan to use this drive strictly as a back up, among several, of my most important data. I'll plug it in about once every 1-2 years to back up and update and put back on the shelf. Speed does not matter for my usage, as long as it can back up 5 GB worth of data within several hours.

You can get a membership for $20 with stuff back in promos. Also $10 credit for your first scan and go purchase. Its worth its weight . And then its $90 and ships free.

Ah ok. I assumed plus when you said Ships Free. As far as I know, Sam's charges a shipping fee per item for regular members. They even charge a fee for curbside pickup orders.
