so you pay with one of those prepaid one-time-use cards so there is no chance they can bill you full price after the year is up, even when you remove form of payment.

Firewalls are built into every functional OS (well except primitive iOS). You sound like the type of guy that would buy volcano insurance too. You never know right. 🤷
