DOT regulations:
* No more than 90 pounds total in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* No more than 45 pounds in a single cylinder in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* Up to 1,000 pounds in an open bed pickup truck or trailer. (Has to be open, not enclosed).
* No special driver license needed, just a regular driver license.

In addition to DOT regulations:
* Most places will only fill a 100 pound cylinder if it is in a secure and upright position. Tied down with rope or strapped in the pickup bed. Not unsecured and rolling/moving around.

So, to haul around a 100 pound tank; just need a regular driver license, a pickup truck or open trailer, and some kind of way to secure the tank.

Costco used to do, but I found tractor supply will purge and fill charge by gallon like Costco did.

I keep a couple full to run a dual fuel generator in case of emergency. Petrol will spoil over time. Propane keeps indefinitely.

I made a simple brace for my truck out of 2x4s that secured the bottom of the tank. I use four straps to secure the top.

2.14 for bulk wth! man amerigas is charging me over 4.50 bucks a gal (florida) i haven't seen 2 bucks since before covid to fill my home tank up. insanity

I ditched the whole duel fuel thing 5 or 6 nato cans is just easier to store in smaller foot print hurricane season with non eth. my 8500w inverter at 25% load is 14 hours on 5 gallons, 12 on a single 20lb tank at less watts. cars, boats, equiptment burns it quick after few months. Considering only a few hours of run time needed a day it's a respectable length of time. LP generally though is the way to go though for disaster as they rarely get used, i'm in ae flood zone and power lines thru air, high velocity hurricane zone, ian ,etc i haven't had to use the gen in 2 years and in 25-30 years not more than a 5 times.

How long will this power my backpacking stove?
I estimate about 2 or 3 years, but it's quite a load to take along.

The issue with your comment is that most people understand they can "google maps" something. If you don't have a clever, interesting, or otherwise helpful suggestion; please do not comment. If you dislike the "where can I X" questions, you can simply report them. As I have done with your comment, for example. Thank you.
That WAS a helpful response - there's really no other good answer besides "search locally for a place that does propane refills". Telling them to go to ace hardware or wherever else is misleading because not all of them do propane refills.

Why would I report someone for asking for help?!

I can't believe a slickdeals moderator actually deleted my response 👎... Especially after my edit to explain why, AND it also addressed inaccurate price information posted by others (people said this is the same price @ Walmart, it's not - it's $189 there)

Isn't this the same price at Walmart all the time?

Yes, not a deal. Regular price.
Wrong - it's $189 at walmart [walmart.com].

Damn that's a big tank. What yall doing with something this big?! How do you even safely transport it? 🤔
Hurricane prep for me. I calculated how much power I needed for 2 weeks, bought a generator that would support that and propane tanks. I have 2 100# tanks just for this that I dont touch for my gas grill.

What is an easy way to transport / move this around? it's ~170lbs when full
I have 2 of these tanks (Bought them many years ago) and when I needed to fill them I rented a trailer from Home Depot that had the tall sides, mounted them in the front corners. Tractor Supply filled them for me.

Might not be a bad idea to get a solar + battery/inverter setup if you can afford it.. never hurts to have some redundancy / extra backup capability.
instead of solar I would put that money in more battiers. While running the generator have it charging the battiers with the un-used power.

I mean yeah, you can certainly do that (and I have), but when you can get free power from the sun, reducing or even eliminating the need for fuel, why not?

I know you're joking, but just so everyone knows, the 20lb tanks are $46 as of my recent visit.
In California you can get 3 of 30 gallon tanks for about $53 each. They are much easier to transport and refill.

Yep. Where you can get propane (refills, specifically) is going to vary based on your location, and local ordinances/laws... Can't really just tell someone to go to Ace Hardware because not all locations do it. For me, I've got a mom and pop place that does it cheaper than any of the bigger stores.

But yeah, thanks for the downvotes, folks I wasn't being a jerk - it's literally the best possible answer because it depends where you are.

Why do you, or anyone for that matter, care if you get downvoted? lol

Most of the time I am on the PC web browser and you don't even see that ridiculousness anyway. Are you one of the people that comment, "first" on a youtube video? Or one of the people that film a tragedy with your cell phone instead of helping to stop it all in hopes of getting a 'viral' video?

getting rid of social media would be THE biggest blessing this planet has seen in a very long time
