DOT regulations:
* No more than 90 pounds total in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* No more than 45 pounds in a single cylinder in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* Up to 1,000 pounds in an open bed pickup truck or trailer. (Has to be open, not enclosed).
* No special driver license needed, just a regular driver license.

In addition to DOT regulations:
* Most places will only fill a 100 pound cylinder if it is in a secure and upright position. Tied down with rope or strapped in the pickup bed. Not unsecured and rolling/moving around.

So, to haul around a 100 pound tank; just need a regular driver license, a pickup truck or open trailer, and some kind of way to secure the tank.

Costco used to do, but I found tractor supply will purge and fill charge by gallon like Costco did.

I keep a couple full to run a dual fuel generator in case of emergency. Petrol will spoil over time. Propane keeps indefinitely.

I made a simple brace for my truck out of 2x4s that secured the bottom of the tank. I use four straps to secure the top.

BJs does 20lb fills for $15 which is usually the cheapest I see, so maybe a 100lb for $75?

Yeah, I was looking at my local propane place.. for empty tanks (reconditioned/recertified - they do a pretty nice job cleaning/painting them like-new) they charge $30 for a normal 20lb, $70 for a 30lb, $90 for a 40lb, and $150 for a 33lb commercial/forklift style tank.. so yeah, definitely get economies of scale with the small/common 20lb tank
Are you sure it isn't cheaper to just ditch an old tank via swap? Blue Rhino is $20 for a tank and 15 lb of propane. They're raping you on the propane, but if you get a good tank out of it that's worth like $30+ by itself.

Plenty of people giving away tanks on marketplace or BN, I get them, trade them in via BR for $20, get a good tank and 15 lb of propane, then just refill at BJs $15 for 20 lb. Sure beats buying brand new tanks for $50.

Depends where you live.

Where I am, it is impossible to get a good non-expired cylinder from Blue Rhino. They are all WAY EXPIRED, like 20+ year old tanks with a fresh coat of paint. So can't refill them, can only get into the viscous cycle of continually trading them back in. Which is probably what they want. Still don't know how Blue Rhino is allowed to do this, there must be some kind of loop-hole that allows then to keep refilling their own expired cylinders. And where I'm at, it's $24 for Blue Rhino.

Not really that impressive of a deal after comparing to Menards, this is their standard non-sale and non-rebate price. With the 11% off rebate...and Ohio's current tax holiday you could get a really good deal (assuming you're in Ohio...big assumption on my part). Either way that's a good price break if you're close to a Menards store with easier in and out of the store most likely. Upon review, It looks like this is an online only item at Costco.

Product title: Steel 100-lb Empty Propane Tank
Model Number: YSN100 Menards ® SKU: 6358073
Everyday Low Price $164.99
11% REBATE Good Through 8/11/24 $18.15
PRICE AFTER REBATE Price $146.84
It's sad when people down vote a better deal at Menards, completely goes against the spirit of slick deals. I stopped posting Menards slick deals or price comparisons because of the down votes. It seems if people can't get it on Amazon or Costco they just down vote it. 351 massive stores in 15 states, for the most part , lower prices than Lowe's and home Depot on exact same items with or with out the Menards rebate.

Anyone know if I can fill this up from my 100 gallon tanks that the propane company fills up? They told me a couldn't fill little grill size ones from it as it takes a certain valve or something to do with pressure, but I think the person I talked to was not knowledgeable.
I have the 100 gallon hooked up to my grill so no way a smaller tank can't handle the pressure.

I fill propane at uhaul. Best deal I got was buying 2 20lb tanks for 35 each and they filled them for free. And I haul 2 or 3 20lb tanks using hitch carrier. But the need for large tanks is vapor pressure in cold temp. In low temp such as 10F 20lb tank could not supply enough pressure and could ran out of pressure while still 10lbs propane are left in tank, so bigger thanks are needed especially for generator

its 70lb empty so it would be 170lb once it's got a fill of 100lb of propane.

and no you cant put it in your car, aside from being a bad idea/pain its also illegal. you have to transport it on an open truck.

That sounds like way more effort & hassle than what I'm willing to deal with to MAYBE save ~$10 - and you may not actually be saving anything at all with gas prices these days, especially after you consider your time.. Plus, those tanks are often not as full as they could be.

My place refills for much lower than what Lowe's/HD/etc charge for those exchanges... Plus, I'm way more confident in the quality/state of the tanks my local place sells than the junk those blue rhino exchange lockers typically carry - they have so much junk specifically because of people doing what you're suggesting lol
