I actually bought this last month to bypass my phone's hotspot data limitations so I can slack off at work.

If you have a modern android phone(I use a galaxy s21) you can install EasyTether pro on the android phone and connect the phone to the router with a USB-A to USB-C cable and it will let you use the phone's data.

Any devices connected to this router will use the phone data without using "hotspot" data

It does require some setting up but not too difficult.

once it is setup, you just turn the router on and open up easytether on your phone and plug your phone into the router.

the setup is basically

1. installing the driver in openwrt.
download the openwrt 19.xx -openssl download on the mobile-stream website, who is the developer of easytether

the driver is in the "mediatek" folder, labeled mt7622.

2. buy and install easytether pro on your android device.

3. turn on the usb debugging on your phone.

4. open the easytether app on the phone and plug in the phone to the router.

5. In OpenWrt configure the EasyTether network interface (tap-easytether) to use DHCP and make it part of your WAN zone.

for more clarification, you can see the easytether website instructions next to the openwrt 19.xx driver download

the driver is the mt7622 file. you should install this using stock gl.net firmware because if you flash the latest openwrt firmware and then try to install this driver, you will get errors

My cell carrier is USmobile with GSM network btw. and it works without any issues for atleast 8 hours straight. I didnt test longer than that as it is unnecessary.

also make sure that the cable used is a data-transfer and not a charge-only usb-a to usb-c cable. you can figure which is which if the connect the phone to a computer and the computer recognizes the phone as a phone and you can move pictures from the phone to the computer. this was the part that caused me alot of trouble.

These perform better than regular hot spots. You connect 2-3 devices on hotspots and you'll notice that it starts slowing down. GL iNet devices have the same features as bigger routers. Port Forwarding, Static routing, VPN, Dynamic DNS and more. I wouldn't use the GL iNet travel router for home use though.

you don't really need the app, but it makes it easier.
you can change the TTL param in the router, and get the same result.

I paid a few dollars more for this a few months ago.

Works well in hotels with captive portal. I only need to log in once, and it works solidly for at least several days.

I didn't notice any performance issues, though I hadn't tried the built in encryption features.

Step 2. Phone Setup

Once you installed the mt7622 package,

On your phone, install easytether pro and turn on usb debugging.

If you don't know how to turn on usb debugging, Google "turn on usb debugging [enter phone model]" as each model is slightly different.

Once you have usb debugging turned on.

Open easytether pro app on your phone.

In the easytether app, checkmark the usb box.

Now with a usb-a to usb-c cable connect the phone to the router.

Note: make sure that the cable you use is data-tranfer capable cable and not a charging only cable.

On your phone, you should get a notification requesting permission. Click "allow" or "accept" or "allow always"

After installing the mt7622 package, anything else we need to setup on the router side?

TIA

When you are at hotel. connect the router to hotel WiFi and connect your device, say phone, to the router. Captive portal will popup in your phone browser i supposed? What if the captive portal didn't pop up?

Step 3. final router setup

Now in the router ip 192.168.8.1/cgi-bin/luci,

In the header at the top. Go to Network -> Interfaces

On this page, on the left side, find the Word "WAN"

Next to "WAN", click edit.

In the new popup

Set protocol to "DHCP client"
Set device to "tap-easytether"

Press save

Then at the bottom press "save & apply"

Note:"tap-easytether" may not show up unless you connect the phone to the router

Now your internet and all devices connected to the router should work.

you only need to do the above once.

Afterward, you only need to start the easytether app, check the usb box and connect the cable and once easytether says connection established, internet should work.

Yes,

To clarify. Your router will connect to the airport wifi.

Your devices(phone, tablet, laptop) will connect to the router.

Your devices will get internet through the router because the router is connected to the airport wifi

But most of these public wifi have some sort of QoS settings in play, right? Like if they notice large data downloading they throttle it.

I bought this a few months ago hoping it would make travel easier. My plan was to preconfigure all my kids devices, switches, tablets, Roku, etc, plus my phone and laptop to auto connect to this router which would VPN back to my home network. It absolutely struggles with the captcha screens in most hotels making it virtually useless. I was able to temporarily clone the Mac address in my phone to make it work, but that stopped working after a few minutes. Decided not to spend my vacation time troubleshooting device issues. Overall for the amount of time you spend configuring or troubleshooting the device, I don't think it is a worthwhile purchase.
Have you retried again with the latest firmware?

I had the same issue about same time frame as you and discovered there was a bug in the captive portal and maintaining a connection with the hotel WiFi. Like you I tried everything with Mac cloning, dns workarounds.. used the latest nightly build and it all started working. Wasted 2 nights on it but was working at the end of the day.

For those saying it doesn't work as a repeater/router mode in hotels or cruises, if you clone your phone MAC address (dns rebind), the hotel/cruise WiFi can't know how many different devices you are actually tunneling.

I never had this problem with my old Slate, but perhaps that this a good thing it is still under active development.

Great device and price!

I bought this awhile ago and have been using it full time as a router for a 2,200 square foot house due to travel for work. The speeds with ProtonVPN through WireGuard are pretty good (150 Mbps+) and I haven't had any issues with it dropping signal or needing a reboot.

Much lighter and smaller to pack into my luggage as well compared to a traditional full size router.

It should, if you replace the MAC with one from a cell phone, the ship's network shouldn't be able to spot the difference between your router and a phone.

Here's a similar product for ~$10 less. $63 after 30% off coupon. No idea what OS it is running or how often it gets updated though. It goes down to $58 during recent Lightning Deal sales.

They're pretty much the same, hw wise.

The Cudy got less flash though, 128 vs 256MB, not a deal breaker as long as you run the manufacturer's firmware, but it might matter when you go to OpenWRT, where you can install additional software.
