Thinking about using this as an audio splitter but I'm not sure if it supports that functionality.

For example; I have a PC monitor that has no built in speakers or HDMI eARC support and a soundbar that has HDMI in. In theory, I can simultaneously get video from the PC monitor and high quality lossless sound via HDMI on the soundbar by using the splitter.

However I'm not certain if the splitter even supports audio passthrough. I guess it's cheap enough to try my plan regardless. I'm in for one to test my half ars audio splitter idea; thanks OP.

I know a "Higher Quality" splitter [amazon.com] will work from experience but I'm not sure about this cheapo $5 model as nowhere in the description it mentions audio being duplicated; just video.

For example, I had a 1080p speakerless PC monitor attached to that aforementioned splitter with a 5.1 ONN soundbar [hilineelectronics.com] that worked great; I was able to have 1080p video for the monitor and 24bit 48000 hz audio come to the soundbar via a single PC's video card hdmi signal that was being split. Not sure if I was able to passthrough Dolby codecs/formats to the soundbar via that setup though...

You can try an OREI eARC 4K 60Hz Audio Extractor for around $40 [ebay.com]. (Perhaps even cheaper on Ebay if the listing has Best Offer; I paid $20 shipped for example via that method)

I mentioned the useful device in a unrelated thread if you want more info. Long story short; it allows old audio receivers to support lossless audio via HDMI that don't have eARC capability. Only drawback is that the OREI has only one video input and output so you are limited to one device for audio extraction.

A workaround is attaching all your HDMI devices to your TV then use the TV's eARC port to output to the OREI HDA-927 Audio Extractor then finally have the OREI pass that signal to your receiver. Just make sure that your TV has lossless audio formats passthrough as many don't and use Dolby Digital Plus which is a lossy format.
Your soundbar is ARC which is about the quality of the TOS optical input. eARC is an entirely different beast that while having a similar name requires much more to get working.

That OREI device you linked could work if you have a TV that supports eARC, but it wouldn't work for your monitor setup. I've linked a real audio extractor in another post that handles the EDID for the display and audio system allowing all the bells and whistles to work with the latest standards. It's definitely more expensive.

A lot of TVs also only have a single HDMI 2.1 port, so having a switch might be needed in some setups.

Do these effectively strip DRM? Need to broadcast a firestick on my coax modulator. Last splitter worked for about a year but thinking some update on the Firestick circumvented the stripper.

can't you just solder in parallel another output and run it passively. I understand that the signal gets two times weaker, but for shorter cables, would it be a problem?

I can use one of these but can anyone clarify this comment a bit:
> Note: Mirrors same output on 2 screens; splitter does NOT provide 2 different outputs or allow for switching between 2 outputs

Let's say I have my laptop connected to two external monitors via this. In that case, I can set the display on laptop in "Extend" mode where it would show a different output on laptop's built-in monitor, and a different output mirrored on two external monitors? For example, I have PPT in slideshow mode where it shows presenter notes on laptop but shows slides on two external monitors?

Or, it would just work in "Mirror" model only where all three monitors show the exact same display? Sounds like it this mode which is what they are showing in one of the photo too on Woot website.

Your laptop would only recognize a single external monitor. If you choose mirror, all 3 will be the same. If you chose extend, the laptop and externals would be different but the splitter would send that one signal two both external monitors.

Thanks but seeing that one picture on Woot made me wonder if laptop wouldn't give me Extend option having this connected. I guess, I will pass given if this doesn't work in that extend mode, I will have no use of it and no point paying return shipping.

Not great for home use. At work we use similar splitter when doing presentations.
In the office, wouldn't you just have your laptop as 1 screen, and whatever youre presenting on as screen 2? Just curious.

Does anyone know if this will assist with HDCP bypass for video capture via hdmi on capture cards?

Well I would like to be able to play my legacy consoles on 2 different tvs or watch movies on 2 different tvs and I think this would work for that. Not everyone wants something like this for PC use only.

You can either (a) "mirror" or (b) "extend" your laptop to the input of this device. This splitter can't really control what you decide to output from the laptop. Whatever you choose to send to this splitter will be mirrored to the two output ports.

So in essence you can have (a) three physical screens showing the same content (mirror from laptop) or (b) one laptop screen showing one output, and then two external screens showing the same second output (extend from laptop).

1. Amazon Basics DOES NOT stand behind their products. If this dies, you're probably SOL. Stay away from Amazon Basics for anything you'd want to have last.
2. These cheap splitters die young and suck with long runs. I just had one cheapo die from another brand, the second to do so. I'm now sitting pretty with my heavy duty monoprice unit. Sure, it has 8 outputs, and I only need two, but it always works every time, year after year. This is important if you actually need one of these.

I use these to mirror my hdmi security system to two different tvs in the house
