I'd say the largest definer in that will be if you have a factory tweeter location. If you have to cut your own hole/mount the tweet cleanly somewhere, it adds significant time and skill to not butcher it. If you're not up for that, then stick with a coaxial speaker versus this component set.

I got these for $58 shipped last year (the link below, sold out, was for JBL 629 coaxial speakers but Woot sent me the 609c instead).

They sound great, I had an installer put them in while doing some other upgrades at the same time. One of the JBL tweeters was blown within a week. I don't know whose fault that was (I won't rule out myself - maxed out treble EQ and played at high volume) and brought it back to the installer who had more durable tweeters they recommended available for $10 each (I upgraded both as a precaution). He did remark that the blown JBL tweeter was "a tiny little thing". Been great since December. Just an anecdote, take it for what it's worth.

How easy or hard for a novice to install them?

Whoa, this post just transported me back to upgrading the speakers in my 1995 Honda Civic. Even back then I could never get a good component system this cheap. All four speaker locations for $140? Killer deal.

These are almost normal price, pretty deceitful that they would claim they're originally $150. On Amazon the normal price is $78.

Listen to this guy. I chose these as the tweeters were able to be broken down to a smaller size. One of the same reasons I liked the type s components when installing. I also hated having to make a spot for a tweeter where there wasn't one before, never looked right.

I'm curious to know what it might it cost to have these installed and possibly a sub as well. If you don't mind me asking what was the cost on your install?

An additional subwoofer would require another amp and would constitute a good amount of wiring. Usually goes from battery thru firewall, under trim and seats to the back of the vehicle. Someone could do it lazily and not have to pull out the interior but it wouldn't be a clean install as you would have wires running through your cabin. It's easily a 3-4hr job for a tidy sub install. I usually tell people it's not usually worth it unless they have an old vehicle with atrocious sounds and for me it's not worth it unless you do it yourself. A full audio install can be costly in labor.

I have the coaxial version and they're seriously good despite the entry price point. Skar makes a compact 5-channel for cheap and I run two sets of coax and a subwoofer off the amp and it's way better than it deserves to be. If had to do it again, i'd run the components though for that additional separation but like others have mentioned its a pain to fit them particularly after you've run all new speaker wire and deadened the doors your patience has run out.

I don't remember exactly b/c they did other work for me at the same time and I purchased some equipment from them (rear speakers of a different size + SiriusXM tuner module) but I think I was quoted in the range of $50 to $80 per pair of speakers to install.

I did it at an independent automotive electronics store and I'm glad I did. First off, I had no experience with component speaker installation which involves the speaker, the tweeter, and the crossover (though the car already had tweeter mounts). They were also more flexible than a corporate chain like Best Buy which I had earlier asked for an install quote (Best Buy charges [bestbuy.com]more for component speaker install, refused to quote or install a parking brake bypass switch which allows DVD ~ videos to display at all times, and for the independent store it was no problem when they found out the previous owner had modified my non-JBL rear doors to use 6x9 speakers instead of the factory 3.5" - they let me choose 6x9s on-the-spot from their existing stock and installed those instead. And when that JBL tweeter went bad, they didn't hit me with another install fee to put a better one in. But I suppose YMMV when it comes to independent stores. I've heard some don't like it if you bring in all your own purchased items for installation - in my case it was a mix).

Can you put components in the rear doors also or would it mess the sound? I'm planning to swap the factory speakers without amp
