At $200 vs. $300 for the 10th gen, this is probably a better deal. 3 and 4GB of RAM is going to lead to lots of page refreshing when switching between browser tabs or between the browser and another app. A lot of sites that have continuous scrolling or lots of embedded media and javascript will refresh even when not in the background. This gets incredibly annoying. Chrome is almost unusable with 3GB and javascript on. Safari handles it better.
USB-C on the 10th gen is limited to the same data transfer rate as lightning, but you can play videos directly off of a usb c thumb and a player like VLC. The 9th gen needs the camera adapter and the adapter needs to be connected to a charger to use most non-lightning thumb drives and playing media off of a lightning drive is much less straightforward. The M1 Air at $400 is going to hold up a lot longer with double the RAM of the 10th gen and it has a full 10Gbps usb 3.2 interface, so transferring files to and from an external drive can be up to 30 times faster. The matching keyboard folio is dirt cheap used and locks into position, so it's a much more stable stand than the 10th gen's kickstand and floppy Magic Keyboard. It's also compatible with the ipad pro Magic Keyboard, which has a similar stability advantage and allows you to connect a charger and a usb device simultaneously without needing a hub. This is really nice when you need to charge and use wired headphones. On that note, Apple's usb-c headphone adapter is really quite good and is substantially better than the lightning adapter. It has enough power to drive my 250 ohm DT770s to reasonable listening levels, where the lightning adapter can't.
You'll also get 2-3 years more major OS updates with the M1 vs. the 9th gen. It's hard to tell with the 10th gen. It may get dropped sooner than the M1 due to its RAM limitations. The 6th gen with 2GB is getting dropped in 18 while devices with the same CPU and 3GB are getting the update.

You get a lot more for the $50 upgrade to the 10th gen.

10.9 inch screen vs 10.2
Usb-c native
12mp 4k camera vs 8mp 1080p
Surround sound speakers
WiFi 6 vs WiFi 5
Supports new gen Apple Pencil and magic folio.
And of course better processor.

People aren't just on slickdeals for deals but also knowledge sharing and recommendations. Lots of people are on the fence between the models. If I can get 3 more years out of the 10th gen vs 9th gen I say it's well worth the $50.

The 9th gen is from 2021. But obviously get what works with your lifestyle. This is still an awesome price but I'm hoping the 10th gen gets a better price for a little more $$

USB-C vs lightning port is the main reason I would want a newer iOS device... Just one less cable to carry around

For ideos and FaceTime this thing is fine. My 7 year old uses it for videos, Roblox, kids messenger (video chat) and random games. Had it for a couple years. This generation is also my work one (teacher) and I do alot from it. For presenting to photo editing and of course videos. I even use a pencil with it and it works great.
I got a cheap pencil with 5 extra tips I think for like $10 off Amazon and it works great. I hate how overpriced Apple products are. 😢

what if usage changes

for example i'm getting tablets for my 2 young kids , 3 and 5

becuase prior amazon fire and lenovo m8 tablets were very slow n laggy

is a $300 10th gen better than a $200 9th gen if their usage is going to be limited to toddler stuff / kids apps?

10th is a major upgrade of 9th. but 9th is sufficient for kids uses.

I mean, yes, but for many people, everything out there is type C now. Phone, laptop, headphones, etc. adapters are just something to lose while the 10th gen just plugs right in.

I would also note that we have seen the 10th gen for just $50 more. You get a whole lot more there. Obviously, if you don't care then of course it doesn't matter and nothing is wrong with that, but for many people, Type C native is the expectation.
A USB-C adapter is something like a dollar. That's a lot less than $50. But hey, go ahead and drop all that extra coin if you got it. This isn't a place to find products on sale or anything....oh, wait....

I'd argue that the 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th gen are all going to be perfectly fine for most people casual tablet uses -- not just "for kids", as demeaning and condescending at that sounds.

If you need more power under the hood for 3D games, larger files, nicer screen for playback, etc. -- then by all means, look into the Air or Pro tablet lines.

The only practical reason to get the absolute newest generation is longevity -- you'll *probably* be able to own it for longer before Apple arbitrarily decides "ok, time for you to upgrade since we didn't get enough revenue from you" and end-of-lifes it.

I'm typing this on a 10 year old model that just received a security update yesterday.

MGL12LL/A 16gb storage running 15.8.3

It's my bedtime iPad for podcasts, browsing, and streaming. Works fine for these purposes.
