Whether you need the auto-empty feature depends entirely on your situation. People who have pets that shed and a lot of carpeting swear by it, saying that the bin fills up every day. I have a pretty big house with hardwood floors and no pets and can go 2+ weeks without emptying.

One thing I would consider is how neat you and your kids are. The thing about robot vacs is that they have rollers that will go under the couch and under the bed and pick up all kinds of things that can clog up the vacuum. I look under my vac weekly and can't count the number of times I've found hair bands, jewelry, paper receipts, face masks, string, rubber bands, even socks wrapped around the roller and/or blocking the intake -- not to mention the hair and strings wrapped around the main brush or the side brush or the wheels . So while auto-empty sounds nice, I just don't get the notion that you can "set it and forget it" for months at a time. It's a mechanical device that requires attention to run efficiently. My 2 cents.
I have been using this for years. Amazing device, works great. The mop feature is not great, I'd rather have a bigger dirt bin. It also verbally complains every few minutes about non OEM filters while it sweeps as if it was a disgruntled coworker.

It comes with a charging dock, but not an emptying dock.

I paid $359 a year ago and love it, I don't mind having to empty it manually. To me the added costs of the empty bin and bags wasn't worth it

I really want to try a robovac but honestly have no idea what I need. Would love the ones that auto dump and fill up, but they're expensive and I don't know if they're worth the extra cost. We have two large dogs (German Shepherd and Border Collie) plus a 5 and 8 year old. I just want this to clean up the fur nightly and keep the floors more mopped than me doing it once every few months when I have time.

Had this for about a year now. Very happy with it. Does a great job cleaning overall, wish I had gotten one years ago (vacuuming is my least favorite chore!)

Great insight. My kids are a mess and I honestly had never considered this LOL. While this will be just for downstairs, which is mostly where the dogs are, I'm sure even their thick hair will need attention on it frequently. Our downstairs area only has one section of carpet (medium pile) and a thicker rug in the living room. If I can tell it not to do the rug, I'd be fine vacuuming that myself. Mostly I just don't want dog hair building up in the corners, like it inevitably does, or my kids crumbs all over the floor in the kitchen.

How often do you empty it? We've been on the fence for a long time and thinking of jumping in. The Q7 Max is 220 and the Q7 Max + is 380 with emptying dock.

You can tell it not to do the rug, but it does great on rugs. It will, knowing where the rug is, ram itself up onto it and automatically boost it's power to MAX for just the rug, then go back to whatever setting you have it on for the rest. I think this vacuum actually tested one of the best for rugs.
