It wouldn't. Direct sunlight, and the UV that comes with it, is one of the harshest things on exposed wood. Clear coats provide no protection against it unless they are specially formulated with UV blockers. For that, you need an outdoor targeted spar urethane or similar finish.

For general outdoor woodworking, you can check out something like the minwax helmsman spa urethane: https://www.amazon.com/Minwax-632...000Y4BRDG/

This is an outdoor varnish with UV blocking and enhanced water and weather resistance. It also has increased flexibility to reduce cracking from shifts in the wood due to moisture and temperature.

However, for a deck, you would probably be better off going with a deck stain. Just be aware, there are different types of deck stains including transparent, semi-transparent, and opaque. The more transparent the deck stain is, the less protection it provides and the more frequently it has to be applied.

From personal experience, this isn't as good as doing it the "normal" way
Cons for me were increased drying time, tacky gooey results, and the color seemed to yellow faster

Similar to spray painting
multiple thinner layers > 1 thick coat

Probably not very long, it says nothing about outdoor rated, or UV protectants, or anything like that. None of the pictures with it are exterior things either.

Yeah, I applied it on some stuff, easy to apply but after 2 years it's all pealed. Won't use again.. Even the Walmart Thompson stuff works better.

Does not mention UV protection, so really more for indoor projects not exposed to harsh sun rays.

Thanks OP for the posting:

I've been very happy with polyurethane to finish most of my projects, mainly Furnitures and cabinets past few years; all water based.

I like Varathane triple thick (can or spray) the best, but it's not cheap any more.
this very Minwax water base is 2nd favorite for the price. I got it for $12/can
Behr is not far behind, but can't beat Minwax price.

as usual, proper prep/sanding is the key.

I have some bar stools I spray painted black, but when we pushed them and the legs touch the white breakfast nook underneath the black rubs off onto the white paint. If I apply this will it stop the paint from transferring?
