8GB of ram is really lackluster. You can chew through that with just basic web browsing. Hopefully this has an open slot otherwise that's a waste of a pretty stellar CPU.

Unfortunately, it's soldered.

So this laptop is basically e-waste.

I'm curious - 8GB is a penalty, but for a light user (for whom I will be installing a lightweight linux distro) - how much sense does this make as a office machine?

Should be fine, honestly.

Look into some of the optimizations made to windows by the tiny11 project and implement what you can. Windows 11 loves to sit at around 4gb ram usage but they were able to trim it down to below 2gb.

8gb is fine for office work, web browsing, streaming, pdf's, word docs, and similar.

Soldered RAM is unfortunate, but would be tolerable if there was a 2nd RAM slot available. The yoga 7 does not have a 2nd slot, so there is zero upgrade path.

For a little but more $ I would recommend something like the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 gen 5 or gen 6. The base models come with 8gb RAM soldered but there is a 2nd RAM slot and crucial or amazon sells the 16gb RAM for less then $35. It's easy to self install and for the extra $35 you have total of 24gb ram.

Direct from Lenovo there are frequent sales and promo codes and the last two ThinkPad e14 I bought recently were both under $550, after customizing to add touchscreen, the higher end webcamera, larger battery, and backlit keyboard.

But that would not be 2k? Isn't QHD usually called 2k?

The 8gb soldered ram means it is dead on arrival. 8gb is too low nowadays. They could have easily given 16gb at this price.

If it only had 16GB RAM. Like others have said, in this day and age of AI, no matter how you deny it, any new 8GB laptops are DOA.

Agreed. Makes you wonder if the manufacturers where hit by the AI wave too sudden not recognizing a key spec is RAM and thought they can get away with 8GB in the lowest margin ones for a while longer...

Being in the market for my kid's school laptops all summer the sudden push for Chromebook Plus devices to run AI (Gemini) to not stay in the shadow of the Microsoft Copilot+ PCs. (all crap if you ask me)....
