I disagree that $130 is very realistic on the 515 (it requires the seller to drop it to $150 and then also offer a 15% + coupon on Garmin, where Garmin is often excluded from coupons - and even then, it has to be in stock, so don't hold your breath on $130)... $150 for the RT515, however, is more realistic a few times per year. Also, if you don't ride on the road and only ride on trails, then the RCT715 is more of a luxury item. If, however, you ride on the road, then the value quotient changes quite a bit. You're being facetious about it's only helpful after somebody dies. Most on-the-road cyclists do not die in accidents, but many do get seriously injured and many guilty drivers either flee (ie, hit-and-run) or they lie about what happened in the accident. The built-in camera can be invaluable in such situations.

I want a Varia, but from everything I have seen in terms of reviews the RTL515 is the best version. The camera doesn't get great reviews, and probably wasn't worth double the RTL515, but is it worth $100 more? I know if I buy this there will be a sale on the RTL515 right after!

The radar is amazing, the light is OK at best and so is the camera, but gets crazy extra points for all 3 in 1 package.

I think the camera is good to have if you ride on public roads with aggressive, negligent, or a-hole drivers.

This product is listed on wellbots dot com website for the new adjusted price of $299.99 and coupon CHECKOUT20 should apply - so if you can make the $500 threshold the Amex $100 kickback would apply.

I was trying to build out my cart for the Garmin FR 265 watch and posted to the Garmin FR 965 thread that sold out yesterday these thoughts….

For $100ish you can get the Rexing A1 which is a 1080p front and rear helmet/bike dash cam which records for about 3.5 hours on a single charge. I have one and am happy with it for the price. Also includes a remote for locking clips or taking pictures.

Good deal. I paid $320 recently through Horizon BCBS Blue 365 Deals (health and wellness discounts through insurance). I was upgrading from the original Varia I had for 8 years. Really appreciate the camera feature. I live in a state with front license plates, so not a bad feature to have for aggressive drivers.

I have one of these and I like it so far. I'm still tinkering with settings, but I get about six hours of riding before needing to charge again. Had a 7 hour ride yesterday and was still running, so not sure what I changed.

Video quality is just fine. Example here at about 30 seconds in. https://youtu.be/FVXoOHxOCjI?si=bqnfuHu7q21HTqgT Warning, cyclist is run over (and lives).

No, video won't save your life, but it's the same reasoning you're buying a dash cam for your car these days. There's idiots on the road and you somehow have to prove you didn't do something, or try and catch a plate for a hit and run.

That video quality looks worse than highly compressed 720p.

Anyone think that they are releasing a new version of this? I've never seen Garmin deeply discount anything until it's on track for replacement.

I have the non camera version and this is tempting. Watched a few reviews and didn't come away thinking this is worth replacing my current unit. May hold out for the next version of this

I have the non camera version too and it's a game changer. Knowing when a car is coming make such a difference. Sure you can still get hit but it allows me to make sure I'm in the best position when the car does pass.

The RCT715 was just released in May 2022, so it's only a little over 2 yrs old. Not sure where you're getting "looooong overdue" for an update from? Are you maybe confusing this with the other non-camera version? - the 515 hasn't been updated in many years.

I have the RTL515 and it was the smartest purchase I have made for the times I road ride.

seriously. i never had mirrors and wondered for years what the big deal was with this radar. finally curiosity got the better of me (and the hyperbolic praise by fellow SDers like you) when it finally went below $150 (with coupons, few months ago). i don't even have a head unit (use a cheapie android with RWGPS & Locus Maps). what a difference in comfort level on bike. within a week I understood exactly what folks were saying and feel the same way. smartest/best purchase for my bike in a long time (ok, maybe second to going electric few months ago as well). I still confirm by looking back before turning but the audio cues are a gamechanger. The light flashing variability is cherry on top. kudos to Garmin for implementing this so well. a usb-c update might be in the works, but if I lost mine today (I do have it well-secured to my saddle bag/saddle) I will be buying another tomorrow.

Very good summary and I tell everyone I can the same. I've been using the stand alone radar for long enough that the battery is starting to show it's age a little bit (battery is not user replaceable BTW).

I just came here to say that the combination of a mirror and this radar is unbeatable. A few weeks ago I bought a pair of the TriEye glasses and they are a super addition to this.
