I disagree that $130 is very realistic on the 515 (it requires the seller to drop it to $150 and then also offer a 15% + coupon on Garmin, where Garmin is often excluded from coupons - and even then, it has to be in stock, so don't hold your breath on $130)... $150 for the RT515, however, is more realistic a few times per year. Also, if you don't ride on the road and only ride on trails, then the RCT715 is more of a luxury item. If, however, you ride on the road, then the value quotient changes quite a bit. You're being facetious about it's only helpful after somebody dies. Most on-the-road cyclists do not die in accidents, but many do get seriously injured and many guilty drivers either flee (ie, hit-and-run) or they lie about what happened in the accident. The built-in camera can be invaluable in such situations.

I want a Varia, but from everything I have seen in terms of reviews the RTL515 is the best version. The camera doesn't get great reviews, and probably wasn't worth double the RTL515, but is it worth $100 more? I know if I buy this there will be a sale on the RTL515 right after!

I have the RTL515 and it was the smartest purchase I have made for the times I road ride.
Agreed. I reluctantly bought it when it went on sale for $150, thinking I could return it if it sucked. But in the rare instances I'm on the road (these days), it's VERY nice to have. Pairs seamlessly with all my Garmin computers and also with my phone---although using a $200 computer makes more sense than my $1000 phone, but that's just me. The flexibility to use either is nice.

I'm not sure if this unit has this, but one cool thing on the RTL515 is the tail light flashes more prominently to cars as they get closer to you, which might (just maybe) get their attention if they don't already see you.

There are also plenty of people in my group rides who have submitted police reports for failure to provide 3ft of space and the police do ticket or fine depending on the city. More recently, my state passed a law that drivers must change lanes to pass a cyclist, if possible. This one has been harder to enforce but they also submit the footage when it happens but it happens so often that I think the cyclist has given up.

When this unit first came out, essentially all reviews had a field day on its buggy and sluggish video software in particular. Otherwise the light and radar functions were excellent, which was why I stuck with the 515 option. It's been a few years since its release now, has Garmin made significant improvement on usability (video in particular), or is it impossible due to hardware limitation? Honestly though, I have little faith in Garmin's ability to update their software given how basic things are with their watches / Connect.

Kind of like how people who post gross generalizations about groups of people are the worst slickdealers.

This is certainly the lowest price I've even seen this device since its inception. It's long due for a refresh and I'm hoping Garmin is gearing up for such a release soon.

Still issues I believe. I looked up some recent reviews and people still seem to complain about the software.

I assume this is on sale because there's a new version somewhere in the pipeline. That's normally what Garmin does and it might be to your advantage to wait unless you really want the camera features now.

Have riders found the camera feature useful? What's the battery life with the camera recording?

Was wondering how this stacked up against cycliq fly.

This guys likes the Garmin, mostly because of the radar
https://www.theproscloset.com/blo...got-better

the new fly6 pro supports 4k (== read license plates) and is $349
https://cycliq.com/bike-cameras/fly6-pro/

I ride with a mirror, no problem with situational awareness, ride handling. But I've always been wondering about having that rear recording should I need it.

I think you're comparing apples to oranges. The Garmin RCT715 has a radar + camera + light functionality. The Fly6 Pro is just a camera + light. If I wanted a camera + light, I would just get an action camera and a separate light. I would not spend $350 for just a camera + light device.

The radar part of the RCT715 or RTL515 makes a huge difference if you're riding on the road near traffic. Paired with a bike computer like a Garmin Edge (it also works with a smartphone and their app), it gives you visual and audio indications of rear approaching vehicles. Once the vehicle passes, it also provides indication it's all clear.

I've had 3 approaching vehicles come up from behind me and all showed up on the radar/bike computer. Sure, you can use utilize a mirror but unless you look at the mirror, you don't know if a vehicle or multiple ones are approaching. Some electric and hybrid vehicles makes almost no noise these days. The RCT715 although isn't perfect, it's a good blend of features.

My Cycliq has slowly degraded in its ant+ functionality and picture quality… not sure if it's firmware or just quality issues.

The cyclist camera space is ripe for disruption. Wish Wahoo would come out with a good option.
