Saucepans, not so much. A lot of the things you put in saucepans (like tomato sauce) can degrade the seasoning and promote rust. That shot of simmering tomato salsa isn't a great idea.
Also, the nonstick properties aren't as important in a saucepan as a frypan (though nonstick is still useful).

The little I do use is like tossing a few cherry tomatoes in a quick stir fry. Hasn't been an issue.
It will absolutely happen to a new pan with "weak" seasoning.
Garlic is worse, my lodge melting pot (which only sees butter) had garlic butter in it one time. Clear ring where the garlic was.
