The app is essential if you have a local music library. If you are not streaming local music and using a soundbar for TV you don't really need the app. However the app is probably used by 70% of its users for local music streaming and the main reason many purchased the Sonos ecosystem. Many Apple users are using a $3.00 third party app called SonoPhone for iOS only which has allowed local library streaming. Android users do not have that option. There is a real fear that Sonos may not survive this app debacle as their stock and sales are significantly down. They may be purchased by another tech company. It's unknown at this point which is why I advise people to wait to see what happens before investing in Sonos at the moment.

Be sure to research all the issues Sonos has had with their app before you buy into their platform. Now that their stock has tanked, it will be interesting to see how the company responds.

This. I was coming here to basically say the same thing. I've loved my Sonos for years until this App debacle. It really does make what used to be a great system/experience absolutely frustrating now. It is sometimes almost unusable.

I've started researching alternatives and will probably give it through the end of the year at best.

I have Sonos in 9 living spaces in my house…

Great hardware, terrible software. Read the software/app review before purchasing. Every update gets worse and worse. They keep taking away features and adding useless features making the app unusable.

Vets can get for$384/pair NO tax or shippiing @shopmyexchange. As well as SONOS One SL $151.14/pair.

Get the 300s and a sub in that kind of space, open concept. How high are the ceilings, that would be another factor. If it is vaulted the 300 height sounds may be diluted. I have the 100s as surrounds and really like them that way, pairs with the Beam 2 and sub mini it's a great setup for surround sound with some kind of sense of height (such as planes flying over head) and really works well.

That said, for most people once they set up the speakers they may never use the Sonos app again. It really depends on your use case, but for just generally playing music, most people just play it directly from the Spotify or tidal or whatever app

I believe they took away useful features but I've had Sonos speakers from the Arc, One's, sub, beam, etc. and I've never had any issues while watching movies, shows or streaming music from my phone or computer. Maybe I'm just not a hardcore user and never noticed any issues.

Sonos is such junk these days. Everything that used to work perfectly is all messed up. Not sure if it the terrible new app or partnerships with Apple, etc. All I know is that after spending thousands on a whole home system, it sporadically plays and constantly shifts from speakers to speaker. Unresponsive help desk and no solutions.

I haven't researched for an alternative yet. Just got into the sonos ecosystem and probably will be stuck for a while. I got the arc and two ones as TV sound system. I also stream music from my phone. The app used to allow to cast music from my phone, but now I can only play music through apps like spotify. I know, I am from that era where I have my songs downloaded to my phone. But seeing how the company can just take away features and brick old speakers. I don't feel safe going long term with them.

I disagree about never using the App, you lose much of the power of the Sonos system by just relying on other Music Apps that can stream to specific speakers (or preset groups).

You can't as seamlessly add speakers to groups on the fly, independently adjust volumes, play different things in different areas, perhaps using multiple services, etc.

The 3rd party SonosPhone app also isn't a great alternative as it's lacking in comparison to the previous Sonos app in many ways. But at least it is mostly stable…
