As a reminder, this receiver only has hdmi 2.0 rather than hdmi 2.1 (limited to 4k 60hz, no dynamic hdr support, no vrr (variable refresh rate aka. freesync/g-sync) support, no eARC (enhanced audio return channel), no dsc 1.2 (display screen compression), etc.), has no pre-outs besides the two subwoofer pre-outs, and has onkyo's old AccuEQ room calibration as opposed to the substantially superior dirac live room correction included with newer receivers. This 5 year old receiver is already functionally obsolete for many use cases.

The Onkyo TX-NR797 has been ~$380 several times already, and doesn't make much sense for most people imo, since the far newer and superior Onkyo TX-NR7100 occasionally goes on sale from adorama for $549: https://slickdeals.net/f/17424975-onkyo-tx-nr7100-9-2-channel-8k-4k-network-a-v-receiver-549-free-shipping

I got this to use in a 2.0 setup to stream music and play from turntable. It works better than other amps/DAC in the price range for that.

It makes sense for people who don't have much money to blow, lol.

excellent deal, would buy this again at this price every time. no earc is probably the only thing that i'm missing (and more of a bummer because it seemed like they were maybe going to add it via firmware update), but honestly there are PLENTY of folks who would be just fine with this and not even be able to use it to its full potential. (i really doubt there are THAT many people trying to run vrr 8k blah blah with their gaming console/pc who ALSO want to deal with an avr, but of course i could be wrong.)

this still gets fairly regular firmware updates, as well. anyone who wants to ball on a budget with a 5.1.4 atmos/dts-x system (with thx certification), look no further Smilie

What's 200 if you're already spending 380 plus tax... And that's where buy once cry once comes into play.

As a reminder, this item doesn't have the same features as another item that costs more. Seriously. Define "obsolete for many use cases?"

Can you watch movies on it? Check.
Can you listen to music through it? Check.
Video Games? Check.

It's electronics, everything is about the features for a specific "use case." If you need eARC, pre-outs, you're into variable refresh rate gaming and all that, then you are more than a novice and so you already know specifically what features you need. Same if you know that you don't need those features so you are able to spot this "slick" deal on a 9 channel receiver for $380. When the 7100 drops to $550, why not spend $250 more for the TX-RZ50? Or a better Denon? Because of specific "use cases" that's why.
