These streamers stream music from services like Spotify, Apple Music, etc. You can stream music from your iPhone, for example. However, the streaming services stream music at a very high resolution (CD quality or better), and if you have a good enough HiFi system and want to take full advantage of the high-resolution stream, you may want to have dedicated streamers like these.
I own the standard A6 and it's incredible for the price, especially with this sale. It's closer to state of the art than any sub-$1,000 component has a right to be and has many features I'm still not even taking advantage of yet. The firmware is updated frequently and new functionality has been added since I bought the unit. Highly recommended, if you're on the fence.

A6 and A6 Master have dual ESS 9038 DACs, whereas A8 has dual AKM velvet sound DACs, considered better (warmer) than ESS DACs. A8 also has a higher-end clock to reduce jitter. The consensus among those who tried both is that A8 sounds better.

I feel dumb but I honestly can't tell what this does… description isn't helping.

Does this need to be connected to a power amplifier or can it work on its own?
I wouldnt bother with this if you don't have hifi speakers and amp yet. I'll put my money on those first. If you need a streamer, go buy a WiiM Pro and call it a day

Regarding streaming services and sound quality, are you certain you do not have bad information (and possibly, a below-CD-quality audio system since it seems you can't tell the difference)? One of the big negatives of Spotify versus Tidal/CDs/Apple Music/etc is the lack of a true high-fidelity offering.[digitaltrends.com] I have a Spotify Premium account set to their best quality ("Very High"), and it is "good enough" in most instances such as when I'm using wireless earbuds or Bluetooth speakers etc. Unfortunately, Spotify's compressed audio sounds like an old cassette tape (garbage) when my aim is critical listening for nuances and details. This also applies to any music you download to local storage. From the article:

"We also need to discuss the audio quality that comes with streaming songs on both services. For Spotify, the free version of the software streams at AAC 128Kbps via the web player. Download the Spotify app for desktop, mobile, or tablets and it will adjust streaming quality based on your connection, anywhere from 24Kbps to 160Kbps.
Upgrade to Premium, and that boosts quality up to AAC 256Kbps on the web player, and on the apps you'll get four quality levels maxing out at 320Kbps. Spotify's promised lossless tier of service is still nowhere to be found.
Apple, on the other hand, has made significant strides in providing free audio quality upgrades for all subscribers. All 100 million Apple Music songs are now available in lossless audio. Apple uses ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), so the music stays true to the original audio file. There are several tiers of lossless audio available, starting with CD quality, 16-bit at 44.1kHz, and going up to 24-bit at 48kHz. There is also a hi-resolution lossless format all the way up to 24-bit at 192kHz."
I love Spotify's music recommendations and how much better their UI is versus Apple's clunky mess. I also love having access to huge libraries of music on-the-go. For sound quality, however, just slap on a pair of nice (wired) headphones and a cd player, or spin some vinyl on a pair of $200 bookshelf monitors. That'll quickly reveal the difference between Spotify's subpar sound, and uncompressed audio with more dynamic range. There are lots of sounds in a song that simply do not exist on Spotify because the algorithm squeezes out "unnecessary" sounds.
Something else I almost forgot to mention is that despite what the article says, Apple's base quality does not sound as good as my CD collection. I haven't done it in awhile, but I used to go back and forth between songs downloaded from Apple's catalog and A/B compare it to my physical discs. With the right passages, I could tell the difference whereas with Spotify, entire instruments would be missing and many sounds simply not present at all (lower dynamic range, compression, blah blah).
