If you are not interested in using custom firmware yet, these routers support mesh with the stock firmware, but the USB port is disabled.
The stock firmware is relatively new, but is speculated to not receive many, if any, updates, so it may be best to wait until custom firmware support is merged and more mature before messing with installing custom firmware.
How to enable mesh:
- Setup your Main router completely.
- Plug your child node using the wan port to the main router lan port, wait for a solid purple light on the child node before proceeding.
- Log into your main router web admin.
- Click on CA at the bottom right.
- Click on Connectivity and CA Router setup.
- Click on both Add Wired and Add Wireless nodes buttons. Wait for the Add wireless button to re-enable.
- Click Done adding Child Nodes and then Apply.
- Now the child node light should start flashing purple and turn into a mesh mode when it turns blue.
- Disconnect Ethernet and wait for blue light again.
- Move node to desired location.
How to set up as access point:
- Disable DHCP (optional).
- Set the device to Bridge Mode under Connectivity tab.
- Connect cable from your router to a LAN port.
- Get some nail polish and a round sticker to cover the annoying flashing right light.
- Click the 'AC' at the bottom of the page to see the detailed configurations of wifi.

With wireless mesh (instructions below), it's one heck of a deal and blows DECO AX5000 deal out of the water, imho.

I know I have a few "great deals" on "better" routers just sitting in boxes since they were too flaky. My Archer 21 was cheap and just sitting there working.
The fact that you have reliable deco seems unlikely this will be better.
At this price I grabbed since not too painful to test. Takes time to setup then reconnect all your smart bulbs etc. took me an hour while doing my laundry etc to set 2 Linksys as child mode for mesh.
I'm using WiFiMan to test and only just be using last week. I have noticed better speeds due to extra node for yard...but really everything was working even with very bad signal in the past. Better in some tests but for my uses not noticable in real world use
I may have noticed weaker signal only rooms away where it was perfect with only 1 TPlink router. Maybe the hand-off to other AP.
So far I'm happy I ordered 3... only 2 arrived from when $20. I don't plan on keeping using. Not enough of a benefit for me since I have almost everything wired and one router perfectly placed works perfectly.
I'm only testing due to SD effect and buddy or brother have horrible Wi-Fi coverage due to home duct work and how FIOS placed everything
I have strong distrust of current Linksys software and hardware but for now after painful setup that seemed random. Working fine on stock. I've never setup Linksys account just connected using pwd on router using laptop, change to my choice settings. Once setup parent I got wifi node. Then using app with only router login did channel scan. Tried wired backhaul and Wi-Fi all worked as expected.
The ASUS firmware has more features and flexiblility. You can set up a host VPN, run/access disk storage with the USB port, have 4 WAN ports, and can set up 3 guest SSID's with separate 2.4 and 5G access. The Linksys only has one guest SSID.
