Setup is a bit techie, but the app is mature and documentation is pretty good these days.
SmartThings is the entry and HomeAssistant is the end game for smart home. What can't it do.

20+ zen72 dimmers
10+ zen77 dimmers
5+ zse11 motion/climate sensors
5+ wired and wireless scene controllers
The only hard part left is negotiating a time with my partner to flip off the breaker with the home internet..
Assume these three things:
1. I don't really want to futz around with my house that much, WAF matters, want things to just work
2. BUT, I already have a home linux server running other docker containers (so one of the big blocks to running Home Assistant is a non-issue for me...I just need to buy a zwave and zigbee stick)
3. I don't intend to do very much that is super fancy (at least for now)...mostly basic controls.
I have a hue bridge and some hue lights but I'm not wed to the system (and if anything would like to move away from it). Otherwise basically starting from scratch in a new house.
I run HA in a VM on an old Intel NUC for fully supervised mode. The docker containers were just a bit too much of a pain to keep updated in my experience. However everything is pretty stable and almost never "needed" updates.

My house is big, but it goes faster than you think. 28 smart switches, and that is with quite a few doubles and Zooz Zen77 acting as 3 ways. (no second smart/companion switch needed) I still keep a lot of "dumb" automated switches (motion/timer) for simple areas. (closets, hallways, bathroom fans, etc)

I would recommend HA. I never looked into habitat so can't comment on that. With HA everything just works. It integrates with pretty much everything, very customizable and you can use HomeKit as the front end for family members. And it's easier to start with just a few devices to learn the ropes then add new devices later.
