Lots of people are using Home Assistant now. Best done using a dedicated pc and a zwave controller. An old desktop mini would be perfect for the job, but NUCs and those N series mini PCs are also popular. Or RasPi 4 or 5 could get you started.

Setup is a bit techie, but the app is mature and documentation is pretty good these days.

Amen to Home Assistant! There's no reason to use the RPi for it any more. Buy a small form factor microPC and it will be a lot more robust (lots of articles about RPi flash failures). Get a USB stick from Zooz (maybe on sale), and you'll have a great setup. I was so hesitant to migrate away from Vera, but finally pulled the trigger (wasn't painless), but not looking back!

Mini PC connected to your network and then you can access home assistant from any device at its IP address.

SmartThings is the entry and HomeAssistant is the end game for smart home. What can't it do.

I bought a Hubitat a couple of years ago, leaving Home Assistant behind. Never looked back!

What is required for ceiling fan/light control replacing a simple power on/off switch? I currently have several ceiling fan/lights that are controlled via RF remote receivers installed at the fan, but would like to replace these switches with actual Z-Wave switches that can control both. Does Zooz have a solution for this?
I think the zooz zen30 is meant for ceiling fans and lights. They have a chart showing which switch to use for what scenario. Found it as a "product picture" under one of the sale items.

Anyone have experience with the 800 series zwave usb stick? Thinking about switching from Hubitat to dedicated stick for my home assistant box. Worth it or are there better options available elsewhere?
I have been using the 800LR stick for about a year and so far it's been rock solid. Had an older Aeotech stick before, upgraded to the Zooz to finally get better security for newer devices.

Thank you for posting!! I had just added a "zooz" alert as I plan to start migrating my Kasa WiFi switches over to zwave on HA. I was going to start with just my new basement buildout since these are pretty pricey compared to Kasa, but this deal had me all in on an order to upgrade the whole house at once. This "saved" (let's be honest, there's no savings down this rabbit hole) me nearly $800 over buying off Amazon!

20+ zen72 dimmers
10+ zen77 dimmers
5+ zse11 motion/climate sensors
5+ wired and wireless scene controllers

The only hard part left is negotiating a time with my partner to flip off the breaker with the home internet..

Should I look at Hubutat or Home Assistant?

Assume these three things:
1. I don't really want to futz around with my house that much, WAF matters, want things to just work
2. BUT, I already have a home linux server running other docker containers (so one of the big blocks to running Home Assistant is a non-issue for me...I just need to buy a zwave and zigbee stick)
3. I don't intend to do very much that is super fancy (at least for now)...mostly basic controls.

I have a hue bridge and some hue lights but I'm not wed to the system (and if anything would like to move away from it). Otherwise basically starting from scratch in a new house.

Currently on SmartThings. For people using the mini PC HA setup, how do you handle zigbee devices. The sticks I see are mainly ZWave. My setup is a mix of Zigbee and ZWave.
I actually still use my old smart things hub and just control all of its devices from HA just like any other devices (except it goes to the Samsung cloud first-- I know, not ideal). That's how I'm controlling my zigbee and wave. I haven't bought the zwave stick yet.

I run HA in a VM on an old Intel NUC for fully supervised mode. The docker containers were just a bit too much of a pain to keep updated in my experience. However everything is pretty stable and almost never "needed" updates.

I would get the 99 cent temp sensors. I got some ESP32C3 with a radar sensor and a temp+humidity sensor. It can also do bluetooth sensing with triangulation, its worth it.

My house is big, but it goes faster than you think. 28 smart switches, and that is with quite a few doubles and Zooz Zen77 acting as 3 ways. (no second smart/companion switch needed) I still keep a lot of "dumb" automated switches (motion/timer) for simple areas. (closets, hallways, bathroom fans, etc)

I would recommend HA. I never looked into habitat so can't comment on that. With HA everything just works. It integrates with pretty much everything, very customizable and you can use HomeKit as the front end for family members. And it's easier to start with just a few devices to learn the ropes then add new devices later.

I have it with my HA setup. It works flawlessly with HA and all my devices except one - my Schlage Zwave door lock which refuses to pair with it.
Damn I have a few of the same deadbolt locks as well. Did you try unpairing or resetting it first? I remember when I switched from smartthings to Hubitat there were a few devices that required being unpaired with previous hub before being able to pair it with the new one. Apparently it was an added security feature for my zwave garage door openers. Took me many months to figure it out lol

Yeah I tried unpairing from my SmartThings hub, and resetting and still no go.

Yep, I need to consolidate or get a second one. The modem and switch are in the basement on a UPS, but my mesh routers are upstairs and on separate circuits without one. They come on a lot faster than restarting the modem, but still a pain to cut out for any prolonged period of time.

Easiest to use POE access points.
