Cold Steel is an underrated knife maker, they are a much better knife than Zero Tolerance at half the price

Yup, that's where they were last I heard, but not sure how much production they do from there or if it's more like corporate offices. Most of their stuff is made in Taiwan? California is nutty about the things you can't get shipped into the state. I can't get an airsoft gun shipped to me, but I can drive to a shop and buy one.

Back when I was starting out as a newspaper photographer in nearby Santa Clarita, I worked with this guy who was telling me about this cool knife company his uncle owns out in Ventura. He's telling me about all these cool knives and swords and stuff they make, and if I ever want to get some stuff at cost to let him know. I never took him up on the offer, but then Cold Steel blew up and I remembered his uncle's name was Lynn.
I remember the OG DVDs they would send out showing the knives and how everything was made here. SO glad I pulled the trigger early on with some of their factory seconds.

I wonder how these modern ones compare with opening Amazon boxes laugh out loudlaugh out loudlaugh out loud

CS never did their own production. Carbon V stuff was made by Camillus, machetes were made in Africa, I think their Taiwan stuff was made by Joti (huge oem, also did some SOG, some Spyderco, etc), not sure who did their Japan models as Seki city has a large number of manufacturers.

Really any US brand with an overseas model is going to be made by Fox, We, Joti, whoever makes Navy etc. The fact that CS also didn't have domestic production means they have always really just been a design and marketing entity with outside production.

Interestingly, Fallkniven began as just a CS reseller until they started having their own designs manufactured as well.

Which of these are not made in China and good for slicing fish fillets or sashimi?
If you're looking for a filet knife, I would go with Dexter. I have several different sizes and shapes, and have been using them for years. I don't know where they're made, but they're not super expensive and do the job. https://dexteroutdoors.com/all-fillet-knives/

Just in case you can't decide on a knife I noticed Amazon has broken down the price for some of the knives to $ cost /100g

As is typical, the msrp on these knives is wildly inflated. Some decent deals, but nothing slick

Need to define better.
CS can prolly get the job done for 95% of the people at a lower cost.
ZT prolly has better material and design... But it costs.
Cost is a factor when your goal is to get a job done and who is best.
