The one I ordered just came in today and it was definitely a store model. The unit itself has cosmetic damage on the body so I'm already dealing with a refund or replacement.
Solid price, but note that the Guitar Center page (https://www.guitarcenter.com/Sche...0409112.gc ) has the following disclaimer: "Limited stock available. This item will ship from store and may not arrive in its original packaging."

Since MF and GC are the same company, I'd expect this warning to apply to MF purchases also.

That is shady, why would they ship you a floor model? Can't you call and ask to have it shipped from warehouse new in box?

You can call and ask, but no guarantees.
The shipping of open-box (or even display) items from Guitar Center stores in fulfillment of GC and MF orders is an ongoing sore spot for those who've ordered from them.

You'll be protected by the return policy if you don't like what you get, but some really want brand new in an unopened box. You don't have that guarantee here.

At least they finally have this disclaimer. It wasn't too long ago that they were shipping floor models from GC stores with NO advanced notice; I guess a lot of complaints got them to add that line, but they should be designating particular items as such, or "open box", etc.

My local guitar center refuses to sell a new in box guitar. They sell the floor model
Then put the new one out. They claim it's to keep the floor models from getting too much damage. Needless to say I walked out.

Heck, I bought an Open Box OLED from Bestbuy that was marked "excellent Open box". When I arrived at the location 45 min from me, they bring it out with No box what so ever and then informed me this is the floor model that was ran daily for 2 years.

I ended up buying from Costco.

Questionable business practices aside, this is an amazing guitar for the price. I have the non-blackout version & it's perfect if you're trying to use thicker gauge strings & play heavier tones. For the price, schecter guitars & basses are hard to beat.

Is this guitar suitable for playing rock and alternative/grunge music? I read a comment on the MF site that alluded to it being better for death or thrash metal. Just curious if there's any truth in that statement or if it was just BS, thanks.

It'll do fine with those types of music. The fact that it has active pickups makes it MUCH easier to use with a high gain amp (like you'd do with thrash), but they'll sound fine at lower levels of gain, too.

That said, if you don't think you'll ever want the benefits of active pickups (or the disadvantages of having a battery; be sure to UNPLUG the instrument cable every time you're done playing), then get a model with passive pickups.

Even on ones that don't say that....they can ship from a guitar center store if you buy from GC or MF.

How do I know? I returned 4 Gibson Les Pauls last year and never did get one unopened. They wouldn't discount them either. One had a fretboard separating from the neck. One was dinged up. One had a really crappy binding job on it. One was perfect....except a defective push pull pot. And would have to replace a circuit board instead of just a pot (thanks, technology). It was just ridiculous.

Thank you. I appreciate you not only answering my question but also answering the question as to why it might be more suitable to those types of music in the first place. The comment on the MF review didn't mention anything about the pickups at all.

Considering that the EMG pickups in this guitar cost over $200, and it's got a set neck with a sculpted heel that is really nice for playing on the high frets, this is a slick deal!

You can certainly play rock, grunge, or whatever on this guitar. The EMG 81/85 have been around a long time, and are more of a classic metal/grunge sound than a modern low-tuned death metal sound.

People say "active pickups are for metal" but that's not true. What you do need to remember is that actives usually get much louder than passive pickups, and they don't get duller-sounding as you turn down the volume, so you shouldn't just automatically dime the volume control like you do on a passive guitar. You can set the volume control to whatever makes your amp sound best, and the guitar will sound the same.
