Back in high school, someone gave me a copy of Berserk. The video quality was just garbage, but the series was so good, it more than compensated for the picture quality. Such a badass anime!

Iirc the tv show ends before things really got "good" doesn't it? The 3 movies took the story closer to completion but still doesn't finish things? Love this anime but it never seemed to get done right

The manga goes much further and deeper than the TV show. A lot of what was in the manga was skipped in these, I'd check that out if you enjoyed the anime.

Ya. the manga still hasn't been finished by the time the author passed away in 2021.
His friend and pupil decided to resume the series though....based on their understanding of the original ideas.

This reminds me of a similar manga/anime: Claymore which I like a lot.
Claymore does have an ending though the anime and manga have different endings.
Claymore is like Berserk with a female protagnist.

Nice, same story though? Or should I watch the Netflix one also?

Great series and Discotek did good work bringing this over. It's gory and violent but this a must watch for anime fans for its story, quality, production.

Don't, some people might actually be foolish enough to believe you. This is one of the darkest animes to exist. Also the price is a ripoff for just 25 episodes. The season itself should be just $10

This series and Hellsing are entirely responsible for me getting into anime in the early 2000s. Berserk absolutely enthralled me in a way no other movie or TV series had. Sadly it was the exception at the time and not the rule. I didn't get into Mechas until Gurren Lagann and Code Geass came out. Madoka Magica got me into Magical Girl Dark Fantasy. Re Zero got me hyper focused on in another world animes. Can't go wrong with a Studio Ghibli film either. I've always thought the diversity and potential for storytelling in anime vastly exceeds current movies being produced in the U.S.

I was trying to remember what the title was for Claymore. Thanks for reminding me. Need to go back and watch it again. It's something else.

Pro tip - If you're new to Berserk, skip the first episode. It's from a different story arc in the future and ruins the finale of the Golden Age arc. Watch episodes 2-25, then go back and watch episode 1 after.

I don't entirely agree. The manga begins the same way, and the glimpse into the "black swordsman" arc is an effective hook to keep you wondering how the story gets to that point.

But yeah, don't let the first episode turn you off to the series. It's totally different than the rest of the anime, and even by the time the story gets back to that point, the author had a much better understanding of what he wanted the characters to be.

Regarding the picture quality, these blurays look amazing. They're aren't an AI upscale and are true HD scans of the original source. It's worth the upgrade to have these vs the DVDs.
