But yeah, don't let the first episode turn you off to the series. It's totally different than the rest of the anime, and even by the time the story gets back to that point, the author had a much better understanding of what he wanted the characters to be.
Regarding the picture quality, these blurays look amazing. They're aren't an AI upscale and are true HD scans of the original source. It's worth the upgrade to have these vs the DVDs.
Trying to avoid spoilers, but feel free to skip reading this post.
Dating myself here. Back when I was in college, there were fans dedicated to translating the manga as it was released. This was before any U.S. licensed distribution.
And I stripped the Golden Age arc down so it started as some medieval story about mercenaries. And gave that to my friends. That made it much more of a mind-f to them as characters like Zodd completely came out of nowhere, as with the sacrifice.
Start small and expand the universe. The classic SpiderMan story line is his uncle getting murdered and him getting bit by a spider and becoming SpiderMan. It didn't start with Thor and She-Hulk and a bunch of random MCU characters that someone new to the franchise needs to know about.

Personally I like it the way it is. I was curious to know how the universe got to that point.
It's like teasing.
It's like the 'origin' movies. Some people (like me) like to learn about the origin of a character even if you already know the character.
There's no right or wrong, it's just a way of telling the story.
For Berserk, connecting the dots between the first and the last episode at the end is so satisfying!!
Best ending ever! I wish Game Of Thrones had a similar ending.
And honestly, by the last episode I almost forgot about the first.

Don't know if Netflix has the 2016 series, but avoid it. It's abysmal.

The first episode is a spoiler episode that detracts from the Golden Age arc. And I know the manga does the same thing. But it's spoilers. And it makes Zodd's introduction less impactful, and the sacrifice less impactful.
Playing sequences out of order can be additive, but for the most part it's detrimental and overplayed. Same with multi-verses and alternate timelines/time travel creating a new timeline.
I'll give Miura slack for the Black Swordsman arc predating (release date) the Golden Age arc, as he was fleshing out the characters and probably never had the Golden Age arc even conceived when Berserk started. But Guts being born out of a mother being hung off a tree rescued by the wife of a mercenary. There. That's your origin story. That's a killer hook that sets the tone for the series.

Don't forget that this anime is from 1997!
It was revolutionary at that time. Today, playing sequence out of order can be overplayed because it's deja vu many many times.
It can certainly look like a spoiler to you now that you have seen the entire series and read the manga.
But for someone who is watching it for the first time, it might not feel the same. Yes, technically it's a spoiler. But what's the conclusion you get from watching the first episode? Not much if you're not familiar with the manga. And if you read the manga already, then it's not a spoiler at all.
It would be a spoiler if you learn what's happening to the entire squad (I'm trying to not be a spoiler here).
So personally I was interested to know what happened to young Guts to become what he is in the first episode. It did not have any impact on my feelings when I watched the last episode. Still one of the best endings for me.
