The stainless steel variants have a sapphire crystal screen, instead of the crappier glass on the aluminum models. Sapphire is much more resistant to scratching. In 3 years with the S4 stainless and 2 years with the S8 stainless I've never managed to scratch either one. Smacked against walls, door handles, all kinds of sh*t. Case scratched up? Easy --> polish it. If you care about screen scratches (and they drive you nuts), the stainless is suuuuuuuper worth it for the sapphire screen.

I honestly haven't had many issues at all with the Milanese band that came with my stainless Apple Watch. I have really hairy arms but it's rare for them to catch on the edge of the band. This only applies to the ones made by Apple. If you get a third party no-name Milanese band from eBay or wherever, those will rip your hair out guaranteed.

Awesome, just purchased the 41mm for my kid. Hopefully these have the O2 sensor activated as it's part of the reason for purchase. Now I just need to find a carrier that I can activate the watch on for cellular. My company plan won't allow it without an accompanying cell phone plan. Anyone know of any?

It's 50 dollars cheaper than last 45mm regular SS watch 8 deal! It's an amazing deal! Go grab one if you have the chance! I upgraded from 5 to SS 8 version, no regrets! Just the SS and much durable screen, it can last for years!

Consider the Apple Watch X version won't be coming out this year or with significant upgrade from 8/9, go get this one! It's awesome! This is an insane deal!

AT&T has stand alone plans. We got the plans for two of our kids without phones 2 years ago. May be they still do.

Did you activate the watches using your own iphone?

I don't have an iphone but want one of theses watches as a standalone device.

The only carrier in the US that I am aware will work with family setup and doesn't require other lines on the account is Betterroaming. I haven't use them but when I did research on this topic a while ago they looked like a decent option (but I ended up switching to AT&T postpaid for other reasons which then allowed me to add watched for the kids). They have 7 day trial and cost is $11/month or $100/year.

Trade in price at BB is almost the same for stainless or aluminum.
Apple (and Samsung) watches drop in value severely after just one year when a second refresh comes out (ie. these series 8 SS models will have a trade-in of just $100 next month when series 10 comes out).

And, there is very little trade-in value difference whether it's a stainless steel or aluminum, whether it's 41 or 45mm, whether it's cellular or not.
So, if one is concerned about trade-in or resale value, the best model to get is the cheapest aluminum version.

Been using truphone (now better roaming) with family setup and it's been working just fine. Just renewed the 100/year plan last month.

I did activate them using my iPhone because I wanted to be the guardian in charge of the accounts. I am assuming you can activate them on their own as I remember the watch asking if I wanted to activate the cellular service on its own.

Thanks for the info. What is your main carrier? I've read online that some people were having issues activating Apple Watch when their phone service was different. Currently have Verizon for my kids Apple Watch but they went to 15/month plus all the damn fees.

so I got my first apple watch—41 mm series 8 aluminum starlight—through the $199 walmart deal at the start of the month. have enjoyed it and want to keep an apple watch going forward, i think. a few days ago i also bought a series 9 excellent (aluminum) condition certified refurbished from ebay ($219+ tax). it just got here and i was about to open—i'll return for free it if it's not in essentially unused condition. I'm now seeing this deal—no 41 mm stainless steels in stock except graphite milanese, but if i see the gold/sport band come back in stock, would people recommend going with this over the other two options? it seems like the series 9 for $20 over the aluminum 8 is an easy choice if it is like new condition, but what about versus the ss 8 here? fwiw i'm considering keeping one and giving the other to my partner, would people rec keeping the 9 and trying to score one at this price if that's the case? interested in opinions in general, thanks!

I use T-Mobile standalone watch line. I pay only $7 per month after autopay discount. No voice line required.
