As a former Uber driver tipping is not necessary. Unless you're drunk and obnoxious or one of your passengers is. In that case carry some cash on you and tip when you get out to save your rating. They don't know the tip until later when you tip on app. Usually after they rate you. Rating does matter as a passenger. Many of us auto decline people under like a 4.9.

Why would uber drivers go thru the trouble of rating passengers before getting the tip?

hm.. never noticed my rating till now.
it's 4.85.
Never had a problem getting an uber.

anyway to figure out what specifically lowered my rating?

I'm also 4.85 and never had a problem. For Android Uber app, just go to Account then tap your picture on the upper right corner then tap Privacy & Data > Privacy Center > See Summary then scroll down until you reach "View my ratings" to see your rider ratings.

Don't know if it helps, but I have the same score, just because one driver gave me 1star (don't know why: never been drunk, never slammed the door, and so on) and the rest gave me 5 stars,. Anyway, here's what you can check on Uber app: view a detailed breakdown of your Uber rider ratings in the app:

Open the Uber app and tap on your profile picture in the top right corner.

Go to Settings, then scroll down and tap on "Privacy".

In the Privacy Center, swipe to the right and click on the tile that asks "Would you like to see a summary of how you use Uber?"

Scroll down to the "Browse your data" section and tap on "View my ratings".

This will show you a chart with the number of 5-star, 4-star, 3-star, 2-star and 1-star ratings you've received from drivers over your last 500 trips. It provides a detailed look at your rating history.

Why would you want to take a 7 hour ride in an uber?

Seems a little excessive, but if you need that much of a run, probably much cheaper than a taxi! Maybe they meant between 7PM to 2AM?

My rider rating is 4.98. I used to drive for Uber a few years back and I'd rate someone below a 5 mostly if they were outwardly rude or indirectly rude ie opened the door before I stopped, made me wait at the pickup spot, etc.

How does rider ratings work?

Do you get a ratings pop-up on your driver app immediately after the rider leaves the car?
Do you have to rate riders?

Do you rate the rider after you get notified of the tip?
After 30days, Is there a pop-up saying rider didn't tip?
