For 99% of drivers, they are perfectly fine. When you start going into extreme operating conditions, or you have some need to baby an engine due to reliability problems or similar - I would get one of the premium options.
I don't really do to save the $. Too many experiences of oil change places even dealer screwed up. This year alone friends and co-workers. Oil filter put on leaking due to didn't notice jeep had old filter gasket come off from oil filter and Valvoline jammed on new one.
Another 2 cranked on drain plug cracked oil pan on 2019 Hyundai that already burns oil and all drained out day later. Honda and separate Hyundai dealer overfilled. Quick change places caught not changing filter.
Who knows what crap oil the dump in and $1 filter when changing you $120. No thanks.
Ramps and hour of my time max is same as time driving to and from places that screw up and kill cars.
Can't do it yourself? Team with a buddy show up have cup of coffee and chat as you both do it using their tools.
Can also just find a good local shop and pay $130 or whatever. Cheaper than new engine and higher car payment.
Many don't mind you bringing filter and oil if you are loyal and actually do repairs they recommend.
Might be a while before you give them work so just be nice to them. It's very tough to survive as repair shop with bad car designs and junk new parts now.
Good cars really don't need brakes or tires for at least 50-60,000 miles. Tie rods, control arms etc usually very long, struts 100,000+. Junk sway bar stabilizers often sooner. Just change and check oil maybe gdi cleaning each year or every few.
It also seems that only SOME states require retailers to take back used oil - CT (Where I live) is one. Of course most towns offer some sort of transfer center where residents can take these sort of things (also paint, other chemicals, large appliances, etc etc).
Then some nationwide chains might offer to take used oil simply because it's good business practice.
The car manufacturers' recommended intervals will get the car out of the warranty period of 5 years and 60K to 100K miles. That's all they care about.
But if you want it to last 200K+ , change it more often. $20 for an oil change is LOT cheaper than a new engine.

Lots of anecdotes, but I've had a few cars to 200k and changed at ~ 10k, or whenever the OBDC told me to (which was usually less, like 9k). In fact, one of them leaned to more like 20k on the OBDC and I changed every 10k just because 20k was ludicrous to me. That was a BMW I sold with 194k on it just because it was still on its original clutch and needed a new set of tires which was more than the car was worth at the time.
But you're right, you can't really change it TOO often, worst case you'll just be wasting money and time.

Your car will never know the difference as they are all API SN rated oils.
Just check the level every 1000miles or so and you will be fine.
My Toyota manual says every 10K but I decided to stretch to 15K and analysis came back excellent with <1% gasoline and said the oil had wear typical of 6900miles. I could probably go 20K, which may be the next interval I test out.
