My kids have been using the $6 PSPlay app to stream to their tablets, and they just connect a controller to the tablet with a cord to avoid any pairing/re-pairing issues. Does the PS Portal actually offer any benefits over my setup?

The biggest benefits are being able to hold the screen in your hands, and the ps5-like controls. I love using remote play with a telescoping controller but when I want to play FPS type games I go with the Portal.
But it's a luxury accessory, at the end of the day.

Can you even use the PS play or whatever it is with this? I was under the impression that this can ONLY stream from your own PS5.

If this thing ever gets hacked Id be all over it. Awesome ergonomics and screen. If I could put a few emulators, moonlight, gamepass, etc on this it would be great. Im sure even browsing and watching content would be pretty decent too.

Hopefully someone figures it out and its not locked down forever!

Some guys at Google found a way to install PPSSPP, but it was quickly patched by Sony

Thank you. Kinda what I figured. I might consider this if it could somehow cut down on the lag or otherwise offered something worthwhile compared to PSPlay, but I've yet to see anything to convince me that it's any better.

The official PS app is free, but from what I understand it's not great when it comes to remote play. The PSPlay app is from a 3rd party, but as far as I know, it's the best option there is for remote play.

I think I'm missing something here... How are the "ps5-like" controls any different from using the dualshock controller connected?

The default Dualsense that came with the PS5... Honestly I don't even know if the wired controller is necessary, but I know that it connects instantly when wired and there's no weirdness with the connection vs connecting straight to the PS5, so I just tell them to connect that way. It very well could be even easier for all I know.

Sorry was just listing general benefits over mobile phones with telescoping controllers. Mainly comparing against the same form factor.
