My kids have been using the $6 PSPlay app to stream to their tablets, and they just connect a controller to the tablet with a cord to avoid any pairing/re-pairing issues. Does the PS Portal actually offer any benefits over my setup?

For 200 dollars? Yes..I would expect this thing to run games natively. You know, just like psp and ps vita
Feel free to get a Switch Lite then. It's a cool little system, but this is different. It's not a a system. It's a pretty high end streaming device that's mostly aimed at the dad gamer to be able to spend time with their family, but not take up the living room TV.

MO, lack of native game-play is not a valid criticism. On the other hand, lack of PS+ cloud streaming is a valid criticism IMO.

The controller actually functions like a PS5 controller with the adaptive triggers and such, but overall yes it is a similar experience. I use chiaki and ps play on my legion go and rog ally.
Does it vibrate? Getting a 16 pro max this time and thinking that will be enough. I think it's bigger. I play mostly using a back bone so will need another with usb c

What's the deal? The Portal isn't on sale. The 20% off was posted already last month.

This is another Sony properietary fail.

Waste of money:
1. Can only play games installed on you actual PS5.
2. Can't even stream Sony's own Playstation cloud streaming service, like you can on any other handheld/phone/tablet. 🤦 ♂️
3. Can only use your home/private wifi. Can use public, but need to scan code for wifi with your phone and connect to portal. 🤦 ♂️
4. No other gaming can be done on this... Dumb.
5. Can't even use bluetooth headphones, other than the expensive Sony PS ones....

+1 it's an absolute waste of R&D. They could have been making the next PlayStation portable with all that R&D money that was wasted on the PS portal...

Yes it does. There's a controller for usbc that just released called abxylute s9 that's supposed to have vibration if you want one with the 16 pro max

By the way phone screens are not biggee, due to aspect ratio handhelds like Portal or G Cloud will always feel bigger

I tried using streaming PS5 with Jawbone, and it didn't go well. Phone screen is too small to capture details. When traveling, I just take the switch with me - may just try taking the PS5 along as I bought a carry bag for it.

One of my biggest regrets was buying the Portal. The lag (my internet is peachy) was insane. At home it was meh but when it came to anywhere else, forget it.

Some guys at Google found a way to install PPSSPP, but it was quickly patched by Sony
Something like the G-Cloud looks cool for those who stream, but also want to use it for ANYTHING ELSE. Massive L from Sony.

Like - add a web browser or something - this thing is so gimped.

Have u tried streaming from PS5 to PC? You can just bring your laptop in that case.

A couple thoughts:

1) This deal has been around for a couple months now. I got my Portal for $152 from Target (with the 20% off and 5% redcard) about 6 weeks ago

2) Happy with the Portal itself, but as others are saying, it is only very niche use cases where it actually makes sense for most people. I pretty much exclusive use the portal to play NCAA Football 25. A game like that plays well with the slight lag, and most of the time I am in the menus doing Dynasty stuff anyway. But other FPS and those type games I have tested, it just isn't quite going to cut it.

As someone else said above, I cannot believe it does not support playing PS cloud streaming library. That should be table stakes functionality, and they should have incentive to do so. That would be a great way for the to sell more subs to that service.

tldr - I am happy with it for $152, and my very specific use case. I can see why others don't like it.

It's fun but not without issues. I think $100 is more the proper price point. It's great at home but doesn't travel well. They are all over marketplace and starting to come way down in price. That said I'm enjoying mine since the kids use the tv and I can still play the ps5

Do you get used to the latency? I tried the Remote Play application on my pc close by my PS5 over Wi-Fi. It was not a good experience. Tried Chiaki, the latency was better but the sound crackled. Streaming has not arrived yet in my experience.
