Just FYI, y'all's links aren't opening up in chrome with ublock origin enabled. I mention this because I usually only get warnings that I can push past, but these are hard stops that close the tab that SD tries to open. Here are my ublock settings:

Good info, I usually just end up highlighting and Google searching to find the deal. Good to know in case of unique links though.

If you don't need your 5gal bucket to be an advertisement for target/Lowes/home depot/whatever, just go into your local grocery store that has a bakery (or an actual bakery) and ask for some. They usually have several empty ones that were full of icing or lard and are happy to give them away so they don't have to fill up their dumpster.

Might get even luckier. Some come with lids. I remember years ago McDonalds used to give away 5 gallon buckets that pickles came in. Very sturdy, no advertising, and often with lids. Might still be available today. Coincidentally, just bought lids (only) at Harbor Freight last week. $3-$4 each.

No one should have to buy a bucket. Ask friends who have cats to save their plastic litter pails, or drywall contractors (drywall mud), or check the recycling bins - plus the other options mentioned above.

Good idea for most things. In my case, though, buckets will be used to store grass seed. So I need lids and nothing that can cause very expensive seed to go bad. Grass seed prices increased a lot over the last year so I try to alleviate some of that hurt by buying 50 pound bags and hope to keep any residual safe from critters.

Thanks for the Walmart tip. Will definitely try that. Few things are worse than wrestling with a lid that just won't work with you.

Case in point. I have an oil extractor for changing oil in cars, mowers, boats, etc. it's actually a vacuum pump fastened to the lid of a five gallon plastic bucket (marketed by West Marine). The pump sucks warm oil from the crankcase and deposits it into said bucket. Lid was designed with a translucent plastic accordion/collapsible spout to get rid of old oil. Worked fine until the spout just plain broke off. Now after changing oil, I take the bucket of oil to local auto parts store where they kindly manhandle the lid off and pour out the old oil. I'm very appreciative but really need to find a lid with this feature. Seems like every time I do oil changes, the poor guy at the counter winces when I walk in.
