The harbor one isn't great but works have had the same one for a few years now and does what it's made for I use it for wrapping wires in heat shrink and solder-less connections

I bought this exact model for $14 in 2017 from Amazon. It feels like a proper solid tool like you would expect from a name brand, and it can actually be stored on its end with the hot tip facing up (so it doesn't burn your work surface).


I also have a $10 amazon special. It works OK, but the adjustment dial moves from a bee's fart and its so lightly constructed that it can't be stored on its end.

I bought this in 2020 for the 24.98 price from Lowe's. This seems like a great deal. I haven't put it through a torture test but have used it for several things including heating the cosmoline out of an 1893 gun stock, lots of heat shrink tubing, heating up adhesives, etc. It seems built well enough, especially for $11.

Echoing RazorConcepts' comment re: standing it upright when hot, a must have feature.

is it strong enough to burn a house down if i accidentally leave it on facing the leg of a wooden dining table that has a few jugs of hand sanitizer? just wondering

Thanks, the Harbor Freight gun I have is so sticky from the garbage plastic breaking down, it's unusable without gloves.

Someone taught me you can rub off the sticky plastic with rubbing alcohol. The plastic under it will be shiny but no more stickiness! I've salvaged several pieces of electronics and umbrellas thanks to this tip.

I got one from HF probably about 15 years ago and the thermal fuse blew. I bypassed it and it still works, but safety is questionable.

Yeah this works on old cameras as well if they have a textured grip applied to the plastic it wipes off.
