Beautiful film, but a somewhat complex allegorical story that's open to interpretation, and debate.

If you're already a Ghibli fan, and you've seen a lot of Miyazaki's films, you'll probably love it. If not, this probably isn't the best one to start with.

Great film. Good that it includes the Japanese language version.

My family owns most of the studio Ghibli movies and we've seen them countless times but we all HATED this movie. We thought it was terrible almost from the start and it never got better after that.

Yeah I wasn't super crazy about it myself. I think it's really personal for him, but nobody else is really going to get it. I would be interested in watching it with creator commentary to really understand what was in his mind.

I has to look up some interviews and analyses after watching it in the theatre. Reading that makes what Miyazaki was conveying (his childhood, message to his grandson, relationship with his long-time producer) a bit clearer, but didn't make up for the story ultimately being boring. Miyazaki was super depressed during its making after his mentor and fellow Ghibli director passed away (was supposed to be represented by the uncle in the movie, whose role ended up drastically reduced) and wouldn't have finished due to that and his failing eyesight if not for other animation directors stepping in to help. No surprise that the story felt weak and disjoint.

When you view the story in the sense it is intended, it really is beautiful and compelling. But without context, it is just a little bit meh. So as a standalone piece, it was not that impressive, but when you understand what was trying to be conveyed, it really is well done. Unfortunately, that doesn't translate very well to most audiences.

I started to watch it and only made it about 20 minutes. One of my friends, and my sister, are huge Studio Ghibli fans, and they both said they hated it, too.

On Max now, the movie is just over 2 hours. There's an accompanying documentary - also 2 hours!
