Can you keep the free item on returns?
I'm 99% sure that if you return items used to get the free item, HF will net the free item's price from your return. In other words, there's no hack to get a free item.

For example, you buy 2 items ($10 and $15) and choose the $9 knife as your free item. In other words, you spend $25 out of pocket for 3 items (that would have originally cost $34).
Then if you return the $10 item, I would think HF would only give you back $1 because in their eyes, you bought $15 and $9 = $24.

I bought something from HF when they had the free bucket promotion. I had to return the item and they were OK with me keeping the bucket.

It would be rude of them to ask for the "free gift" back

I have a 3 stores near me. The store that is closest to me pulled a d#$k move today. Yesterday I went in and bought an item and got the free metric wrench set. It was near closing time so I figured i would just stop in today and pick up another item i needed and get the standard set to go with it. I got there not soon after they opened and the selves were empty of the set. Yesterday they had plenty of them on self and in a box up front near register. I asked an employee and he said he was told to gather all the free items to have near counter. So i get to counter and cashier tells me they are all out. Not only are they out of the wrench set I wanted, but out of ALL 4 free items. I pulled up the app and it showed in stock for all 4 items for this store so I asked manager to get me item i wanted and was told they were "out". This was way BS.
This store is in path of my daily commute so I normally do all my purchases at this store, but no more. I drove to the next closest store and they had tons of the items remaining so got it there.

Yea, I got shiasted into ITC membership. It was tacked on near closing time, and the total seemed too high. But just paid and left. Afterward I noticed the charge and was confused because I specifically stated "no" when they ask that line they ask every customer if they want ITC.

I thought no big deal, I'll just call up corporate, the next day and explain it was a mistake and that should be the end of it.

NOPE, I called and was told somewhat rudely, I'd have to go back to the store to have it reversed.

I went back to the store and when I told the cashier and manager what happened. It was like I had cut them off on the road and threw a drink at them on the way to work or something. They were SUPER reluctant and I felt like I was making a big a-hole move. What made it even worse was the manager was making the cashier manually redo all 20 items I bought on the receipt. A line was starting to form and the cashier coudnt even get the first item to work.

I just told him don't worry about it I'll just keep it.

What's the lesson?

If you want ITC, it's good for a year, and btw, no take backs! Neh nah neh nah neeh nAHHH

The real lesson is that some people will just add s*** on to your bill and you have to pay attention. Same person you added that, might have taken your credit card and tried to copy the numbers real quick or grab a picture a front and back. Same type of person.
