For example, you buy 2 items ($10 and $15) and choose the $9 knife as your free item. In other words, you spend $25 out of pocket for 3 items (that would have originally cost $34).
Then if you return the $10 item, I would think HF would only give you back $1 because in their eyes, you bought $15 and $9 = $24.
This store is in path of my daily commute so I normally do all my purchases at this store, but no more. I drove to the next closest store and they had tons of the items remaining so got it there.

I thought no big deal, I'll just call up corporate, the next day and explain it was a mistake and that should be the end of it.
NOPE, I called and was told somewhat rudely, I'd have to go back to the store to have it reversed.
I went back to the store and when I told the cashier and manager what happened. It was like I had cut them off on the road and threw a drink at them on the way to work or something. They were SUPER reluctant and I felt like I was making a big a-hole move. What made it even worse was the manager was making the cashier manually redo all 20 items I bought on the receipt. A line was starting to form and the cashier coudnt even get the first item to work.
I just told him don't worry about it I'll just keep it.
What's the lesson?
If you want ITC, it's good for a year, and btw, no take backs! Neh nah neh nah neeh nAHHH
