Is an Optiplex just like any home desktop (or what's the difference, please)?
It's just a brand name. Generally, Optiplex is considered a business-class machine versus a consumer/home machine...which for Dell, that difference is considerable (business > home).

Would that imply a "better-built" machine?

Yes. The optiplex line is solid and built to last.

Thank you. And yet it "works" just like an ordinary "consumer" desktop (I'm 77 & a dummy about such)?

Optiplex is Dell's "business" class machine. It is built to a higher standard than their home desktop. The parts are better and lasts longer. (higher quality capacitors for example).
Used by most medium to large businesses and universities.

Precision is Dell's "workstation" class machine. Designed to be even higher quality than the Optiplex line. Often used by engineers or CAD/CAM design, or content creation.

Vostro is Dell's entry level Business computer. It's lower end than Optiplex and aimed more at small businesses who can't afford the Optiplex/Precision machines.

Inspiron is Dell's consumer machine, can be found at Costco, Bestbuy etc. Aimed at the typical home user. Typically the lowest cost.

XPS is Dell's gaming machine. Usually slightly better than Inspiron and usually has discrete graphics cards.

So...if you're updating to Win11 because Win10 is no longer being "supported"....you'd be going to a potentially unsupported Win11? That's a difference without a distinction.

The difference is windows 10 will no longer receive security updates as of fall of 2025. While Windows 11 will continue to receive security patches for the foreseeable future. Even on those "hacked" windows 11 installs that bypass the minimum hardware requirements, you'll still be able to get security patches. You may not be able to do in place upgrade to future major releases of windows 11, (such as 24h2 coming out later this year), but you'll keep getting security patches for the version you're on.

I bought one of these a few months ago with the capital one deal and it's been fantastic. First of all the thing is super small and cute. Not sure how they packed so much into the unit but it's so easy to open and upgrade storage and ram and Wi-Fi if you ever need to. I replaced the nvme with a 1tb Samsung. Plenty of power for the parents. Used the dell recovery option for a clean windows 11 install that has been working flawlessly. I'm seriously considering ordering a 2nd one.

I need a desktop for my son's school work (elementary) but also want to use it for basic gopro editing. I know next to nothing about computers but plan to us the simple gorpro studios editing app. Would this computer be sufficient?

No gaming or anything else.

This is fine for any school work. And will probably be ok for some light gopro editing. The SSD is relatively small at 256GB so it can't store a ton of videos. you may want to upgrade to a larger 1-2TB SSD if the editing is anything more than an occasional short video.

I replied to the reply above but I'll say similar thing here: if you stay on the Windows version it ships with forever, it's gonna be fine, but Windows 10 is reaching EOL Oct 2025 and after that you are on your own or you need to upgrade to Windows 11, which has become even more bloated and stutter prone each and every update since Microsoft is cramming all the copilot AI and other ads stuff into it. In addition to all of this, 10600T the T in it stands for a binned down low powered chip and it's already 5 generations behind(11th, 12th, 13th, 14th Ultra 1 and Ultra 2 is right around corner, even if we skip 11th and 14th which are essentially reskins, it's 3 full gens behind).
I'm not saying it's unsable, it's just going to be either insecure(win 10) or slow/stuttery(win 11). If you are fine with using a slow computer that takes seconds instead of split seconds to open something, sure, a lot of people don't care, I do, but this does not change the fact that it WILL be bogged down by future Windows versions.
Naah Dude. Don't be a PC Elitist. For the average home user the specs say it is a fine bit of kit. Hard core gamers aren't even looking for systems like this since even the current high-end equipment struggles with some of the latest games.

anyone know which power supply the tower model comes with? the specs page lists several options, not seeing which comes with this refurb. would be great if it can handle something like a 4060

Its weird how much you appear to know about this, but then you actually dont.

There's no reason this PC would be bogged down and "stuttery" with future windows versions.

99.9% of the time that happens is because people have software/malware problems. To be extra clear cause 2024, it's not a problem with windows or the hardware at all. It's from accidentally installing malware.
