A bit too jaded. I have wide feet and have never been able to fit into a Hoka/Brooks/Asics/Saucony. Altra makes "foot shaped" shoes which run wide and this is really just common sense when you think about all the foot problems people have from jamming their toes into tight/pointed tip shoes. As for "zero drop", that is common sense as well. After all, we were all born with zero drop. One last thing (unfortunate) is that Altra has already been folded into a giant multinational (VF Corp). And the very first thing VF Corp did was start narrowing the foot shape/width. Sigh.

I love Altras, yes for the zero drop, but mostly for the shoe shape. They are foot-shaped and very comfortable. Most other shoes make your feet form to them (Not natural.).

Altras are zero drop, but they can have lots of cushion too.

The "Zero Drop" running shoe fad of the moment that Altra was famous for in the early 2010s has gone by the wayside for mega cushioning like Hokas. Altra's target customer moved on to the next thing Runners World told you to try, which was a Hoka-style shoe. This brand's target audience is people convinced they cannot find shoes from standard running shoe companies like Brooks, Asics, and Saucony.

I could never find a pair of Altras that ran better than any year of Brooks Ghost. The running shoe biz is full of flash-in-the-pan companies that are ultra-trendy but then disappear if they aren't bought and folded into some other shoe conglomerate. I assume Altra will be the next to disappear.

It's a jaded viewpoint, but I'm 95% sure I'm correct.
95%… oddly specific

I'm surprised this shoe brand is still in business. They haven't been relevant for a decade. The minimalist and zero drop trends faded years ago.
The need for a wide toe box isn't a trend, though. Do you have alternative recommendations for similar value?

That's true. If I had to go that route I would choose Topo over Altra. Both brands are catering to a very small segment of the market.

Look into Hoka Bondi. It is highly recommended on Reddit forums for walking. I compared the Bondi and Clifton, the latter was a better fit for me. Been using it for day to day use. Soreness and foot fatigue is minimal now.
Also tons of jokes about their durability

Had the bondi 8 for walking and within 8 months the back of the shoe heel ripped on both lol

Still comfy as hell but damn that's sad. My bondi 7 back heel pad went completely flat in less than a year too.

Love these things, they are not very durable as they should be but love em, hiking or running. Would love the hightop trail/hiking to be on sd soon. Brooks beast might be the only other but the zero drop has really helped with impact pain in knees .

My wife is a nurse who is on her feet for twelve hours at a time. I've bought her every shoe that some website says it's good for nurses, and her goto shoes are her Hoka Bondi. I think I have her three pairs she rotates through. She will wear her Brooks occasionally, or her New Balance. I prefer Saucony, but I do have some Bondis I wore out. They were good shoes that are now my yard mowing shoes.
Same. Wife is a nurse and swears by her Hoka Bondi after trying everything else.

Thank you for your comments. May I suggest an approach to address your issues.

I am very new to running shoes, primarily for walking needs. With SO many premium brands available, and you can read tons of reviews but ultimately what fits best on your feet is the most important factor. For that reason, I joined REI membership.

It's $30 and at the time when I signed up, I given a $30 gift card towards a purchase so essentially, it was free. For me, The absolute biggest benefit of joining REI is having the ability to return a shoe up to 12 months after the purchase. While that doesn't answer HOKA's durability but getting a refund or an exchange would be effortless. With this membership, I was able to wear three different brands for a couple of weeks each before finalizing on HOKA Clifton. The other two shoes were returned, with a simple explanation: They weren't a good fit. I don't work for REI or get anything by mentioning their name, just wanted to share this option.

any style that is wide friendly?
Altra's are notoriously wide shoes in general, especially the toe box.

This has been a Woot Deal for a few weeks...I already cleaned them out of my size on two different models...My first pair of Timpfs and they are absolutely the most comfortable shoes I own! Only problem is everyone makes fun of me for wearing yellow shoes!

Stocking up on paradigm 6. Son has over supination and these have been better than inserts at reducing the pain.

I have extra wide feet and fit well into the extra wide sizes of any brands. Asics being the favorite. Their standard size does run narrow but their 4E size is really wide. Also New balance has even 6E and some other brands too. New baalnce 1080 4E size is really good for me, very light and breathing and bouncy, but it's not as durable. The asics shoes are heavier but they last 2 or 3 times as much, i like Nimbus and Kayano.

I bought these true to size about 3 months ago. I should've taken the advice from the reviews, many advising to go a half size up. I have wide feet and they did not run narrow. However, i felt like my toes could have used a little more length. It was annoying to feel the front of the shoes at the tip of my toes. They are great shoes. Still wearing them for work now. They do make a squeaky sound and it's not from the soles, I hear it on when walking on carpet too. Grip is terrible on wet surfaces. Cushion is very nice but the upper is very thin and can tear if something snags on. Although I've pointed out many negatives, these are still great shoes for the price.

Altras almost have to be paired with long term yoga classes. Very few people have perfect pronation, and perfect pronation is hard to achieve.

With imperfect pronation I think people find cushion assistance "feels better" even if its not better for them

It takes a rare breed to choose the footwear that feels worse, even if it is better for us. Specialized ignorance towards the comfort that quietly handicaps us.
Well, with all due respect, I am no rare breed and I can confirm that Altra's zero drops have been better for me. I was advised by my Physio to give them a try after I decided to not to go through a surgery for my left knee meniscus tear. It took me about a month (approx. 80 miles of easy running) to get used to them. For me it was not the cushion assistance, but it was the wide toe box feeling a little weird with my narrow feet.
I have 3 pairs of them now and my favorite is Torin 7 and found them quite beneficial for my knee injury for the following reasons:
- It has been finally allowing me not to experience swelling to the back of my knee (probably due to getting used to natural shock absorption and distributing pressure and stress on the knee joint.)
- The lack of cushion assistance has helped me maintaining a neutral posture over time.
- As a heel striker (worst for knee injuries), I am finally able to have a constant mid-to-forefoot strike pattern, even in my longer runs.

And quality post VF Corp has dropped rapidly.

Olympus previously were the only shoe I could wear well, and the latest models are both too narrow and don't hold up.

Personally love these. Great fit for me and it's a great price. They also look great. Thumbs up on these.
