Incredible case for installing 3.5" hard drives. Install Windows and Stablebit Drivepool and build your 100TB array.

An excellent homelab / NAS case. Space for two 140mm front fans right on the 3.5" HDD bays.

As someone that has an unhealthy obsession with PC cases and fans, I still use my R4 for a Nas. R5 is basically the same case with a few improvements.

I've always wanted silent since pentium 4 days even using cases like antec sonata 2 which farking sucked for cooling and I had to keep the side off and put a box fan on it during gaming.

Define series are basically the quietest cases I've ever used. I use fractal torrent compacts for my gaming one because it keeps it way cooler for slightly louder but my R4 was always extremely quiet under 100% load during gaming
They're the Noctua of pc cases =D.. Actually I don't even know if Noctua is still at the top. I heard some companies pretty much already caught up, but who knows.

I kinda like them lol. I put 2 drawers in mine that are "push to open/lock". Gonna miss them when I build a new pc soon.
I do the same, unless I might sometimes need a lot of front I/O, and then will add something like this [amazon.com] in one of the bays (which also addresses the "No USB-C" comments. The one I linked to is actually a 3.5", so you I love being able to store extra USB drives, sd cards, USB volt meter, etc. in a little drawer right where they are needed.

Yes, this case is a bit dated now, but is great for a quiet, smart build/lower heat design for a NAS/Plex server, which is what I use mine for now.

If you really like drawers and need a more modern case with air flow, then check into the Fractal Pop Air or Pop Air XL, which have room for two drawers or other 5.25" options at the bottom, covered by a magnetic cover to hide them if you wish. It is a little finicky getting the drawers installed properly so that they open and close well, but it can be done.

It will be only be able to breath thru the narrow strip on the side. What for?
door closed works fine for a low power pc, you can always crack it open if you need more airflow.

you buy fractal for the build quality; i just built an h7 flow rgb, i paid $100 for it and it's weak sauce, for instance i had to grind down the center motherboard standoff because it stuck up too far due to the case manufacturing being off, and the fans are noisy cr*p.

fwiw r5 has a radiator+fan thickness limit on the top:
"Top radiator
420, 360, 280, 240, 140 or 120 mm (a thickness limitation of 55 mm for both radiator + fan applies on 420, 280 and 140 mm radiators; 420 and 360 mm radiators require removal of the ODD bay)
Rear radiator
120 or 140mm
Bottom radiator
120 or 240 mm (Use of radiators in the bottom position limits the PSU length to 165 mm)"

Thanks OP! I'm getting ready to build a new home server so I picked one of these up. Any recommendations for cpu/mobo/power supply for a media server?

You sound a bit like me! Except I maybe go back further, to a Pentium 120. I had the original Antec Sonata -groundbreaking for its time in aesthetics and build quality, thought it might be a "buy one case and forget" kinda thing - but yeah by the time I was ready for a complete rebuild, I ended up getting an Antec P120 white as my new "forever case." Have kept that through multiple builds, maybe a dozen years, but eventually ended up cutting a hole through top to hide a big slow fan behind some mesh. Now I just bought this case, maybe it will be my "ultimate case" simply because I don't know how many more years I'll even be building new desktop big boxes lol

Anything you got laying around. Intel non F CPU is preferred for the igpu.
Make sure your motherboard supports the amount of drives you want.
High quality PSU, but low wattage. Don't need a 900w PSU. 500w is enough.

They may not make it anymore. Looks like the define 7 has a windowed version, but more $ of course

Reading from their website (https://www.fractal-design.com/pr...fine-r5/):
  • 8 (3.5" HDD/2.5" SSD positions)
  • 7 (Expansion slots
Does this mean it comes ready to take 8x3.5" drives and can be expanded to 15x3.5" drives?

Thanks OP... In for one. I've already built rigs in the R4 and the R6 so this R5 one slots really nice in between. I've owned 3x Fractal Design cases so far and while one is still in its box (due to not containing a 3.5 drive bay), I'll reserve this R5 for my next PC I decide to build.

Which air cooler do you use?
I could reuse the optical drive from my old computer. I still have old DvDs that my family watches from time to time.
Thank you for the review/comment.
On my old system with an Intel i5-750 it was a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus, a classic at the time. It's still being made but in a new form for newer CPUs.

The newer one is a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE.

No, that means 8 HDD/SSD positions in the front (there are 2 drive cages that can be put in or removed, 5 + 3), and 7 PCI card slots possible in the back.

There are 2 additional drive bays on top of the 8 HDD slots in the front.

I own this case, as well as a Fractal Torrent. Honestly imo the build quality is better on the R5. We had more metal components, configurable storage inside, sound absorbing panels... The Torrent is more plastic, virtually no internal storage, and a full open front which is the preference these days. It's a great case for what it's trying to be, but I miss when computer cases were about features and not showing off components in a plexiglass fishtank with rgb lighting everywhere.

If you need 3.5" bays, this or the R7 are fantastic options.

Fractal Design makes great cases. Can't go wrong with any of them.
Eh, not quite. Fractal's cheaper line (Mesh? Typically sell around $50) are decent cases but are not in the same league as the Define. They're much lighter, much less refined, and noticeably cheaper in every respect. Worth the price? Sure but simply not as nice as these. I've owned both.
