Possibly, depending on your friend's tolerance for risk, and potential inconvenience.

Goharddrive is a solid company, which ships drives quickly, and has a hassle free return policy. However, their quality control is poor in my personal experience. You may end up having to play the lottery before getting what you need.

Here's what I have purchased from them in the last year –

2024-08-26 HUH721212ALE601 (12 TB) Returned
2024-07-28 HUH721212ALE601 (12 TB) Kept
2024-07-15 HUH721212ALE601 (12 TB) Kept
2024-07-11 HUH721010ALE604 (10 TB) Returned
2023-08-14 HUH721010ALE601 (10 TB) Returned

Each of these drives were 3-4 years old (I appreciate that Goharddrive does not wipe SMART data unlike some resellers). Reason for the returns were each of the drives had "unhealthy drive" status in unraid, and loads of SMART errors.

Defect rate for the 12 TB drives was 33% (same drive that is being sold in the ad). Overall defect rate for all of my Goharddrive purchases was 60%. Too small of a sample size to draw any broad conclusions, but something to keep in mind if you have time sensitive project, and are not risk tolerant. (I ended up buying the same hard drive, albeit recertified from serverpartdeals, a reputable company, for $20 more. No errors whatsoever).

I have a good opinion of HGST drives, based on HD reliability stats published by Backblaze, and personal anecdotal experience. In fact, I have a used HUS724020ALE641 4TB drive which I bought from go hard drive 6 years ago, and it's still going strong.

Bottom line, this a good drive, a good deal, sold by a good company, but you may have to play the used hard drive lottery and do some returns. If you are looking for something more certain and less risky, buy a manufacturer recertified drive (not seller refurbished). Goharddrive and serverpartdeals sell them.

Deathstars are 20+ years old. Unless you're retro-computing with period correct storage..... that's not a real thing to worry about.

It's called data hygiene. If you don't have (current) backups, then you don't care about your data.

Much easier to build fault-tolerant arrays with drives like this. Then brag to your friends.

So yes, it has power pin shenanigans. Not great for a Synology.
Cut or tape the pin, done.
I cut them but I've used painter's tape in a pinch and it lasted years, even taking the drive out a few times. Really not a big deal.

Remember when Thailand 🇹🇭 flooded and HDDs were so expensive. Now we can get 12Tb for less than $100. Take that Mother Nature 🌬️

Oh wait. Are these the dreaded Deathstars? Nevermind Thailand can have them.

Yeah, i'll find a drive that doesn't need all that nonsense.
If you go 16+TB (HC550 family) or carefully check smaller drive model numbers against the data sheets to make sure you have a non-PWDIS variant, then you don't have to worry.

Otherwise you are really limiting what you can buy.. Besides, most Synology units don't care about PWDIS anyway. No clue which specific one you have, but people in the past have routinely reported no issues even with drives supporting 3.3v power disable.

Since SDers love to buy refurbished, is it safe to buy multiple drives (rotating as each becomes full) to use as backup drives for a small business server? Yes, a real small business serving 5 employees. Not a home server. Asking for a friend.

That's not how I would do that.
I would go with a fault-tolerant array of these drives. Having all the same model drive is rarely a good idea, as you are more susceptible to similar failures.
When possible, try to mix brands, models, or at least batches.

But also, if you are doing this professionally, you should be following the 3-2-1 backup strategy so any one (or two) drives failing should be irrelevant. You should at least have off site backups IMO. With cloud backup, that's a lot easier these days.

For businesses, I would use local drive/array backups and cloud at minimum.

Reading the comments about the power reset function on this drive and compatibility. Anyone know if it will work out of the box with the synology DS224+ that is also FP?

Synology have been compatible with this type of drive for ages. In fact I'm not sure if there are any models that actually supplied 3.3V in the first place.

It works fine, I just had them in a DS423+ and Synology haven't used this pin in many years, maybe never.
