Check your local Home Depot for inventory. Mine had several in 73127 where you peeled a flyer in the top of the photo attached to the return desk and they would grab one in a locked grate.

What makes them worth 5x more than a regular smoke detector?
Back when they were released, afaik, they were the only devices that offered wifi connectivity, interconnectivity between themselves without hardwiring and an app that you could use to monitor them/notify you, etc.

Nowadays, with competitors doing the same thing at less than even 1/2 the price? Nothing, really.

Probably because their notorious of false smoke alerts when they get dusty, encounter steam, or even when it rains. I bought one full-price and had it professionally installed and it's been a nightmare. The way my house is laid out, the wiring for the smoke detector is right outside of the bathroom. After a shower - the steam would trigger the alarm.

After awhile, the alarm just started going off randomly - until one day it kept randomly going off with no steam, no smoke, it wasn't even raining. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere for a smart smoke alarm.
Anecdotal on your account. Anecdotally on my account, I own 2 and they have been phenomenal. I wouldn't buy them for what I got them for originally (and even THAT was at a huge discount because I worked where I bought them and there was a special for employee at the time) but I would certainly recommend them. In your situation, I'd have purchased a battery version and put it where smoke/co2 detectors are supposed to be installed...which is not "right outside of the bathroom". In my case I have one "converted", it's wired and installed to one of my typical home smoke alarm outlets and the other is battery and installed to a "flex room" I've turned into an office. Never had a false alarm and never have to deal with that flipping chirp when a smoke alarm's battery is on the fritz. The batteries also last a very long time. If these are $38 at my Home Depot, I'm getting a few.

Don't know about you guys but these type of smart devices eat away the battery juice so quick, hated having to replace 6 or 8? Double AAs every 8ish weeks. We work from home, so just went back to the dumb smoke alarms years ago and haven't changed the batteries yet!
You're using the wrong batteries then. I have two that last significantly longer than that. Have to use lithium batteries.

If your current smoke alarms are trustworthy and haven't expired, think twice before buying newer ones.

These alarms, like all smoke alarms sold in the U.S. now, have a threshold of "smoke" above which you CANNOT turn it off. Not in the app. Not by pressing the button on it. Not no way no how (short of a sledgehammer, which I briefly considered). And that threshold is easily reached with burnt toast, frying, etc. I can no longer have a smoke alarm in or near my kitchen, which is really stupid.

These have a 7 or 10 year expiration date (depending on generation and I am pretty sure these are gen 2). I highly doubt they have enough decade old stock to be widely discounting.

BTW, why do they clearance off hammers and grills all the time? Are they also close to be expired Wink
The hammer and grills don't have Google's logo. Google has a history of killing great things with their logo. For this alone I can't trust it will work as intended in a year and a month from now.

Nest makes (made?) great products but I refuse to touch these anymore given how Google out of the blue will brick your products.

They did this with Nest Secure - basically offering users a pittance of replacement products or a gift card, and half people didn't even get working codes.

So buyer beware. It's great, until it isn't.
