Also get pool rx for keeping the metals in the water out, also a water clarifier every week or so is great. All the other mentioned items from others are essential though you will need those for sure. Home Depot or Lowe's has Muriatic acid in cases of 3 or 4 I usually get those. My heated salt water pool/spa has water features and the ph runs high because of those features so constantly using Muriatic acid.

**Also you will not need this stabilizer (cyanuric acid) in the winter depending on where live of course. If you live somewhere cold during winter switch to chlorine tablets and you can turn the chlorinator off.
Pool RX adds metals - mostly copper - You do not want large amounts of copper in the water as it will cause stains and green hair. Most magical chemicals that kill, prevent algae have copper in them - except chlorine.
You shouldn't need clarifier if your chemicals are in line.

You only really need stabilizer at the beginning and maybe middle of the season if you need to bump it up during peak season/sun. It does not evaporate with water so never really leaves or reduces. It does very very slowly break down as well as leaves the pool when people splash etc. but usually not enough to consistently have to add - not really a chemical to stock up on.

Seems like a lot of them are on sale, about to finish construction on new heated salt water pool, what kind of chemicals should I have on hand?

Buy a good test kit to start. Stock up on muriatic acid and have some extra salt on hand. Download the pool math app and it will guide you through adding whatever is needed to balance your pool. We are new pool owners (construction finished in May) and have been doing all the maintenance on our own.

^this is the best answer. Stay away from facebook groups for the love of god. You don't need algaecide, clarifiers, green to blues or other magical chemicals. If you follow the above site, there is no need to "Shock" your pool weekly or any of the other crap those groups constantly recommend.

Depending on type of pool (fiberglass, liner, plaster etc) you may need to watch a few other chemicals, but the recommended test kit at TFP will take care of that. Join TFP and ask questions there, never on facebook!

All that said, there shouldn't be much to "stock up" on and I would pour over that site before buying large quantities of anything.

Few extra notes -
Pool stores don't always calibrate their equipment so their tests might not always be as accurate as a good test kit(not the strips).
Pools stores want to make money and most customers want fast results - this is the circle of life of getting "pool stored". Products with "magic" results will usually cause other problems so you'll be back to the store for more quick results and the store is happy to make more money. TFP will keep you sticking to basics and your wallet happy - don't over think and have a little patience sometimes.
Maintaining the pool is a lot easier than fighting it, so keep up on testing, mostly just PH and Chlorine once everything else is good.

I just went another season following TFP and aside from liquid chlorine and muriatic acid, we didn't really add anything else once the pool was open. You could clearly see Roosevelts ass on the back of a dime at the bottom of the deep end all season.

I bought this consistently throughout the summer for $15.99 a bag on Amazon. Seems to be a case of raise the price and apply discount to make it look like a great deal.
It has been that price on Amazon recently (prior to this past season was in the low $20s), but does run at least $20 most other stores. Walmart has been selling this for $21 for the past couple years. So $12 is a very good price

I echo following the trouble free pool website

I had for several months taking pool samples to Leslie's pool supplies. It was a very frustrating experience. They would talk to me about my phosphates being high and what I can do to improve the clarity of the pool, none of which really had any difference. Since buying my own test kit and sticking to liquid chlorine, things have improved exponentially!

Just another thought.... To increase my cyanuric acid (which this product is), I'll use chlorine tablets instead
Chlorine tablets contain cyanuric acid and decrease the pools pH, while liquid chlorine doesn't contain cyanuric acid and increases the pH

That's true. Although if you continuously use them for an extended period, your stabilizer level will eventually require you to partially drain and refill to bring it down. High stabilizer levels limit effectiveness of chlorine and require significantly higher levels of free chlorine to maintain sanitation.

This deal is $3 per pound.

You can get it for less than $1.50 per pound from local pool/spa supply places if you buy 100 pounds. Keep it tightly shut/sealed, and it will stay good for a long time.

Bought a house that had a pool, tested the water and the CYA level was like 1100ppm. Ended up paying a lot to have the water filtered. After that, I'm super careful with any products containing CYA and mostly use liquid chlorine and the occasional tab. Got PoolRX+ algaecide from Amazon that works amazingly to keep that under control, better than any chlorine or shock ever did.

lol Head Bang continue using pool rx for a few seasons and you'll be draining again to remove the copper.

PRx only works better than chlorine because you weren't maintaining your levels of free chlorine at their effective levels. Were you using an FAS/DPD test or strips for chlorine?

Maintaining - not dosing once a week to "shock" the pool - free chlorine at recommended levels (depending on your CYA levels) will keep algae and bacteria away. Relying on copper will keep you water clear from algae but wont help eliminate bacteria from everyone's sweat, piss and crusty bum holes or whatever other bacteria's may get in the pool from bathing birds etc. Continued use of copper products will result in the need to figure out a way to remove copper as it also doesn't evaporate.

Proper maintenance of a pool will keep it crystal clear and that all starts with a proper test kit.

Chlorine Stabilizer / pH up or Borax / pH down or Muriatic Acid / Alkalinity up or Baking Soda
Agree, only other one I would add is phosphate remover. And case of shock.

For those saying that 'Pool RX' copper thing is not a great solution. its probably the best thing I ever bought for our 35k gallon pool. Sure, I have the TfTestKit, but who really has the time to check Chlorine levels once even twice a day like some are doing on the forums. At least I don't. Pool RX solved our problems, just add a bit of Chlorine every couple days (prob use 1/3rd to 1/2 as much liquid chlorine as we did before). The pool's CYA is mostly maintained the whole summer with a large liquid stabilizer bottle if getting low, but thats pretty much all we use (we do get alot of rain, so have to empty the pool 4-6 times during the summer [and have chlorine pucks in our 'Sunken Treasure Chlorine Dispenser' to add a bit of CYA back in]).
Anyway, without Pool RX, the pool would be out-of-action for 1.5-2 weeks at a time getting it SLAMMED back to clear levels (twice this summer until we got the Pool RX).

For those worried about your blond family/friends getting green hair from the copper, just tell them its the latest fashion amongst the young peeps Smilie. No issues with staining (but i have a painted gunnite?/cement pool from the 60s, not plaster... yet). But honestly i would be willing to live with any stains on the pool as long as i have to not make my leisure time after work revolving around the pool vs just swimming in it.

I'll have to watch the copper levels as someone stated earlier, but the Pool RX people seem to claim it'll stop working after 1 season so have to buy $60 product once every spring, which I'm fine with.
I read that it dissolves over time anyway: "Pool Rx is not a product that releases the chemicals over time, it dispenses them into the pool all at once and then dissolves.".
Sue them if its not true heh.
