Got this from Costco last time when it was on sale...solid machine with a ton of options....never sewed before...had to start from the scratch watching several YouTube videos...there are a ton on how to navigate around the basics. I was able to alter one of my night pants to shorts, then slowly altered some of my kid's clothes etc....there is still a long way to go but the results were promising.

I have one of these i paid full price for, and have no regrets. Unless you're doing commercial work, these are very solid machines. I did a little research before buying, the Singer brand is not as reliable as it used to be - you really want a 'heavy duty' model if you're expecting to have it a while.

Got this for my mom last year. She loves it and uses it often. Other than that, I can't provide much else in regards to previous owners.

Is this capable of sewing thicker material like canvas/sunbrella fabric?

There's no way in hell this is going to punch through leather. I have trouble going through three layers of jeans where the pocket is layered on top of the seam.

I would think you need one of those sailboat sewing things. to go through leather.

Read somewhere that Singers are rubbish and to get a Brother CS700x, which evidently never goes on sale and is $230. All i really want to do is hem pants, jeans and shirts because I'm a short guy living an a tall man's world. Any recs? Splurge on the Brother or just get the singer?

Most machines can do simple hemming. The type of needle used is probably more important to sew different types of materials.

FYI, despite the name, this machine isn't heavy duty. It's fine enough for a home machine, but it has plastic internals.
