Got this from Costco last time when it was on sale...solid machine with a ton of options....never sewed before...had to start from the scratch watching several YouTube videos...there are a ton on how to navigate around the basics. I was able to alter one of my night pants to shorts, then slowly altered some of my kid's clothes etc....there is still a long way to go but the results were promising.

I have one of these i paid full price for, and have no regrets. Unless you're doing commercial work, these are very solid machines. I did a little research before buying, the Singer brand is not as reliable as it used to be - you really want a 'heavy duty' model if you're expecting to have it a while.

Read somewhere that Singers are rubbish and to get a Brother CS700x, which evidently never goes on sale and is $230. All i really want to do is hem pants, jeans and shirts because I'm a short guy living an a tall man's world. Any recs? Splurge on the Brother or just get the singer?
There are other ways to hem pants though I have never tried it myself. Search on "How to hem pants wiki how " Fabric tape is what I have in mind.

I have one, it died after a couple of years. Wound up being a tiny fuse inside the motor winding. Was not a fun fix.

I did a bit of research a while back and found the same results. A reasonable machine for a reasonable price = CS7000x. I've had a price watch on it, and it did go down to I think $220 in the past 6 months or so, but CCC had it below $200 long time ago. I've been patiently waiting. Having said that - my notes from way back when mention this model as well, and don't have too many negative things to say on it. I had this at $149 so this deal is $10 cheaper than my old research. The only negative thing I have on this model is that the foot pedal doesn't modulate as good as others, and can be difficult to sew at slow speeds. I keep holding out for the CS7000x.

Love this! I've always wanted to learn to sew. Made me smile.

Can you elaborate on "rubbish" part? I will be ordering this purely based on the fact that this is from Costco and I can always return this if it's that bad.. but would love to know what you know.

If you have never tried sewing it is recommended to find a cheaper used machine first (but do get a singer or a brother or a good brand), you can find plenty from people who purchased one and then realized that they don't like seeing this things take space

This is a solid machine for anyone learning to see that a learner won't outgrow quickly. It can't do anything like leather or thick canvas but a solid machine at this price point.

hemming pants and shirts is a good way to get started. however, for doing blind hems, they do make feet that make the process even easier. edit: i'm not sure which brands are included in "they"...

hemming jeans just because they're too long should be doable with any machine so long as you want to preserve the original hem (go to youtube for this, but you're basically cutting off the bottom of the jeans and then sewing it back on higher up...) But if the original hem is worn out because they were dragging at your heels and you're trying to do a repair you're going to have a hard time with pretty much any home machine as you'll being going thru like 6 layers of denim at the vertical seams. Not to mention finding thread to perfectly match is probably going to be hard. If that's the case, take it to a pro or just go for the cutoffs look.

My mom got my daughter a used machine. All metal, heavy duty. It never worked right. Based on our experience and reviews, I would just buy the new brother from Costco. My daughter, soon to be a bio engineering graduate, is now using the machines in the maker space at her college. She said a properly functioning machine makes sewing much more enjoyable.

Is this capable of sewing thicker material like canvas/sunbrella fabric?
I'd like to know this as well to learn to sew replacement Sunbrella fabric for sling patio chairs. I've heard you just use a thicker needle but could this machine handle that?

I have a regular duty Brother sewing machine (it weighs so little it feels like a toy) that I bought at Costco 10 years that I just used to sew several Sunbrella pieces with. I'm guessing this Singer will do just fine, just go slow and use good ball point needles so it parts the threads of the material instead of piercing them. I found that I only needed a needle thick enough that I could get the thread thru it because it sewed easier with a thin needle even though I broke a few.

This is a heavy duty machine. Will it sew leather boots? No. But it will sew two layers of soft, lightweight leather.
It will also handle 4 layers of denim, canvas or ballistic Cordura. So basically you're only limited to what will feed under the presser foot.
This summer I bought the Singer 4452 which is an upgraded model, but mechanically they are identical with the 4452 just having more stitch options (which you'll probably never use).
If the 64S had been on sale, I would have chosen it over the 4452…internally they are virtually identical.
Both models do have some plastic parts but the main drive system is metal and so is the frame. The nice bonus with the 64S is the included extended table which doesn't come with the 4452. That's worth $40 alone.
If you want an in depth review of the mechanics including a "tear down" see the YT link below.

Yeah, I think that's also tempting me to get it, the return policy. What I've read is that the inside of the machine is made cheaply, and I guess sewing machines require servicing every few years, and this one is not serviceable. I guess many sewing machine techs consider it better to throw these away after a few years, once it stops working, and buy a new, different machine.
