This was cheaper yesterday. I priced the 512GB version at $1159 with Edu discount, and $880 if I traded in my S22 Ultra. These numbers didn't include any referral or app discounts.

Just priced it with my EDU account. With trade in of my S22 Ultra the 256GB is $799.99, and the 512GB is $951.99.

With no trade-in the 256GB is $1119.99 and the 512GB is $1291.99

Obscenely joking. Better prices, but the TIV sucks. For full price 1100-1200 is OK.

Agreed. Nothing obscenely good about these prices unless you are used to paying retail.

Obscenely good was paying $250 total out of pocket in 2022 for the S22 Ultra 256GB I am currently using (huge thread here on SD).

Obscenely good was buying a used S23 Ultra for $360, and then trading it in for a Pixel 9 Pro XL 256GB and paying $140 after trade in (so total $500 out of pocket), plus getting a $200 BestBuy GC on top of that.

Almost $1300 with tax for the Fold is not what I would call "obscenely" good if you are a seasoned SDer. But if you are used to paying retail for iPhones, then yes, it's a good deal.

Except pixel 9 pro xl from s23 ultra is a downgrade (pixel 8 pro owner here as well, chip won't last 2-3 years). I had the option to do that passed. Buying a refurbished s22 ultra through Samsung for $90 with an s21 trade in and flipping it into an s23 ultra for $260 more was slick.

Samsung is no longer offering much in the way of amazing trade in deals but if you have no other option and want a great foldable, $1200 or less plus whatever you can get for your phone is still slick. Pixel fold deals are shit, OnePlus open is fine but I wouldn't pay $1300 or so for that when the 2 is around the corner and other Chinese brands aren't worth buying in the US due to lack of support.

I didn't care if the Pixel 9 Pro XL was a downgrade from the S23 Ultra as I immediately sold it for $925 after paying a total out of pocket $500 for it including the cost of the S23 Ultra. So I made a profit of $425, and got a free $200 BB gift card out of it.

But yes, I agree, the crazy Samsung deals from 2022 are not coming back. I got my S22 Ultra 256GB, which is a $1200 phone (over $1300 with tax) for free after trading in a S21 that I bought for $250 from eBay (so total out of pocket was $250). Had to jump through a few hoops like opening and closing a TMobile account, but it was well worth it.

So yeah, I think I would call the two deals above "obscene", but this is a decent deal if you were going to buy a Fold 6 anyways. Just hard for people like me to spend that kind of money after doing so many other deals over the years. Haha.

Props for getting that much back for the pixel. And true, true. But Samsung's MSRP isn't usually revealed to be this 'soft' this early in the product life cycle. I think they're feeling the pressure. Fold 6 imo is by far their biggest step forward since the 3 but incrementalism isn't going to cut it anymore. Foldables will continue to be a niche market (well, the fold kind, flips are pretty popular). A LOT of people that own folds aren't going to upgrade for several gens so the market is already somewhat saturated. I think that has a lot more to do with the low sales figures than OnePlus or Google putting any real pressure on them. The prices need to come down. If this is the start of that, then true, it's not an obscene deal. But still way, way better than anything going even a month ago when fold 5s were seen as a pretty solid deal around this price.

They aren't obscene. They're alright. $1k+tax for a fold months after release isn't shocking at all, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see "trade in a phone get the Z Fold6 for $600" deals during BF like we saw with the Fold5.

Folds just don't hold their value like regular phones for multiple reasons. For example, off and on I'm seeing Fold5s being sold for around the $500-$600 range on Ebay just one year+a month later. if you paid retail, that's about $100 a month in loss of value.

Yeah, the phone market is so saturated and stagnant at this point. From the tech and feature point of view, we are not seeing the kind of jumps that make us upgrade our phones in the past. And all this AI bulls**t is turning me off from upgrading even more.

In terms of foldable, it looks like the only company that is truly innovating as of this moment is Huawei with their tri fold Mate XT that unflolds into a 10.2" tablet sized device. Hopefully, we will see more innovation from Samsung on that front.

For me, the camera upgrades were the biggest reason to upgrade phones in the past, but my S22 Ultra still takes amazing photos compared to the S24 Ultra, so two years later, I have hardly any reason to upgrade besides that flat display.

I thing flagship smartphones have truly plateaued in the last two year or so. Good for consumers as we should start seeing more incentives from manufacturers to upgrade to the new phones.

Fold 6 cam out no more than a month and a half ago. That's a steep discount. I paid about that a week or so after release with a iPhone Xs trade in that I picked up for $150 on ebay a while back so not terribly much more. Fold 5s are still going from $700-800ish in good or very good refurbished. Your point is true. You're just overstating it

I heard that year Samsung made huge losses, so unlikely they will bring those kind of deals back, but we will definitely see better deals compared to what we have today as we get closer to launch of the S25 series.

And who knows, maybe Samsung will surprise us with awesome launch deals like they did with the Galaxy Watch 7 and Buds 3 launch. They gave me $200 for my old Galaxy Watch 4 when trading in for a GW7 + a free band. Combined with edu and CB, I ended up getting my GW7 for around $50. Also got Bude 3 (non pro) for $80 total out of pocket.
