My son bought this laptop for college (and gaming) at this same price over the summer. He is enjoying it. I paired it with the $100 off any laptop that was going around at the time, making it an even sweeter deal

If you can find one near you at a microcenter then this machine is an excellent mid tier gaming laptop for under $1K with a very nice screen. Just don't expect top of the line battery life compared to newer CPUs and bigger batteries.
Pros:
- under $1K
- Really nice screen at QHD and 300 nits.
- Excellent CPU for gaming. AMD has a newer generation out, but this CPU is still more than what you will need for gaming and handles CPU intensive apps well.
- RTX 4070 with 8GB VRAM means quality settings at 1440 gaming. GPU TDP is limited to 105Watts, but most laptop GPUs only really scale up to 115 Watts anyways, so only a minor gimping.
- 1TB SSD
- upgradeable RAM (16GB is fine for windows/productivity/gaming) but for video editing, LLMs or other memory intensive uses, you will want to upgrade to more. Thankfully this RAM is upgradeable.
Cons:
- Microcenter, so YMMV.
- Not the latest generation CPU means less fancy AI cores and higher power usage, but still excellent performance.
- Slightly gimped GPU limited to 105W TDP. Still plays most modern games on high with DLSS.
- Only comes with 16GB RAM, but you can upgrade in the future if you need it.
- Small battery. 3-cell 53.5Wh combined with this CPU and GPU will not last you all day. This laptop will want to be plugged in most of the time.

8845HS doesn't have the same level of AI enhancements as Strix Point, but the 4070 will prove to be a far more capable AI accelerator anyways.
105W is plenty for the 4070. There isn't much if any performance after 100W for 4070 and below. Personally I'd want to limit power more for these mobile parts, since their lifespan decreases with heat generation and cycling in such a small cooling envelope.
Does this have the issue where if you want to upgrade the Ram, you have to essentially remove the laptop motherboard to reach the Ram due to it facing up towards the laptop keyboard and not facing down on the away from the keyboard?

Nope, I have this laptop. It's a standard Ram upgrade. Very straight forward. Although, you will need to contact MSI for a free kit if you want to add a 2nd M.2 drive.

Cool that you have this machine. Any comments you mind sharing about what you play on it and how it handles it? I'm trying to figure out what max fps for destiny 2 would be on this

Helldivers 2 is the only game I've played that's pushed it. It runs on high settings, 1440p, at about 75 or so fps with some dips. I think Destiny 2 would be well above that. When I benchmark with 3D Mark it is right at the average of systems with the same specs. I'm very happy with it, especially for $885 out the door. $100 off any laptop coupon plus 10% off with MC insider card.
